Oh, Hi Mark! | Hippos Can Recognize Their Friends’ Voices

in hive-196037 •  3 years ago

A team from the University of Saint-Etienne in France has been studying wild hippos at a reserve in Africa, and has discovered that they communicate much like drunk lads on a Saturday night – with a series of yells, wheezes, and honks. Not only that, but they can distinguish the familiar voices of family and friends.

The hippos were observed to reply much more aggressively to strangers, with louder and more frequent calls, often accompanied by dung-spraying. Again, lads on a Saturday night.

This discovery, says the team, can help familiarize hippos with each other, leading to more successful conservation efforts.
