A Burnt Golf Course and Bad Golf Musings: February 6 2022

Nature is cruel. It can take away everything in seconds. We live in a region that has fynbos plants. The mountains are covered with them. This creates a thick layer of dead plant material that dries out over time. Fynbos also spreads its seeds in a unique way. It spreads its seeds with the help of fire. Such a fire devastated the local fynbos on the mountain and on my favourite golf course.

It burnt up to the golf course. Local firemen helped keep the fire from the course. It always breaks my heart to think about the life lost in these fires. No human lives were taken but the animal and insect lives. It is eerily quiet when you try to listen.

Fynbos fires burn in strange ways. It burns quickly and without much intensity. This helps manage the fires and it also creates “pockets” where some plants are not touched. It is so funny. Walking on the golf course, one side is black and burnt to the ground the other side of the path not a meter away there is green and lush growth.

Between all the black and grey, there is new life beginning to come through. It is amazing to see the green between the black. Some time this week I will post a series of photographs I took. The green symbolises new growth! Literally.

Here you can witness the devastation right up to the fairway. Fire does not discriminate.

Neither does the golfing gods. I did not play my best. This image attests to that fact! Somehow I managed to end up here.

Luckily, afterwards you can drink the bad golf away. Cheers to another round and to the cruelness of mother nature.

Even in all of her cruel ways, there is simple beauty in all of it. Life finds a way, and we can only appreciate it (sometimes safely from a distance).

In any case, I hope you stay active, mind and body! All of the images were taken with my iPhone. The musings are also of my own before and after that ice cold beer. Let us drink to a future that has new growth in it. Stay active and stay safe.
