Friday.
This is yesterday's report card.
The second heatwave of the year has passed. The temperatures dropped by a whopping 12 centigrade from the day before and the day started with some light rain.
As per @ewkaw's mission assignment I returned to last week's #FungiFriday subject in order to check on its growth over the past seven days.
Unfortunately I can't report much progress in that regard. I think this mushroom has completed its growth stage and is already slowly entering a state of decomposition itself.
@warrkin had previously hinted at the fact that it might be a "chicken of the woods" mushroom. Edible and delicious, if harvested early enough, this one is clearly past its prime now.
Anyway, I double checked and after seeing the specimen throughout its full development, I think @warrkin's ID was spot on and this is indeed a laetiporus sulphureus.
Good! Maybe I'll be able to identify the next one early enough, while it's still fresh. No chicken-dinner today.
I did discover another impressive mushroom a little deeper in the woods, though.
I don't have an ID for this one yet. It doesn't look edible, though, simply judging by its texture. If it was, you could probably feed a whole family with it.
It's huge! The picture doesn't quite do it justice, so here's a foot for scale, size 12 for precision:
And now it's definitely not an edible mushroom anymore, no matter the ID, because it already touched someone's foot!
Thanks for your time!
