Have you ever thought about how people lived a hundred years ago? One of the portraits can be seen in the photo above. This photo by Hermann Salzwedel in East Java in 1910 captures one of the means of transportation in the colonial period, namely the palanquin.

This photo captures the holiday moment of a Dutch family in a mountainous area in East Java. It was seen that the family used two types of transportation, namely horses and palanquin raised by local residents.

This means of transportation not only reflects the level of technology at that time but also reflects the economic and social inequality in society under colonialism.

The palanquin transportation as in the photo above is very strange when viewed with the current perspective. It looks very traditional, feudal, and colonial. It really shows the oppression that is wrapped up with racial-based economic inequality in the Dutch East Indies.

It is possible that things that we consider normal today will be considered strange and immoral in the future because of the development of human life for the better.
