It's human instinct to like competitions related to agility and speed, from the past until now. While we are in Indonesia now in the fever of organizing MotoGP, this photo was a horse race in Bukittinggi around 1911.
This photo was taken by Jean Demmeni, a photographer of French-Madurese descent living in West Sumatra, and the archive is kept by Leiden University in the Netherlands.
We can see a wide race arena and many spectators attended the race. This event was also a prestige competition arena for the rich people who own racing horses.
