According to reports,The United States is asking for an investigation into the reported killing of civilians in Amhara area of Ethiopia. A local rights group claims over 80 people died last week after clashes between soldiers and armed groups.
The U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, expressed concern about the incidents in Merawi and urged for an impartial investigation. A call was also made by the U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia for human rights monitors to have a clear access to ensure justice for the perpetrator of the alleged killing.
other reported violations in Amhara and elsewhere in Ethiopia where mentioned by massinga , which is dealing with several internal conflicts. One of these conflicts started last April in Amhara when the government tried to merge regional forces with the federal army, sparking a rebellion.
Various abuse done by the government forces during the conflict which alleged killings where documented by the Rights groups .The Ethiopia Human Rights Council reported "massive human rights violations" in Merawi on Jan. 29, where over 80 civilians, mostly men, were reportedly killed.
The group couldn't directly blame anyone for the shootings as they couldn't visit the site and called for a thorough investigation. Despite previously being allied, the Fano militia and federal military have clashed, leading to Ethiopia's parliament extending a state of emergency in Amhara to quell the rebellion.
