Horror History - Vampires and Dracula

We continue our spooky history posts with a look at the blood sucking beings known as vampires.

In my mind, vampires were akin to bats, sometimes being able to transform between the two. They are immortal and require the nectar of life to survive, for us that would mostly mean blood. Fangs, pale skin and without a reflection. These are the tell-tale signs of a looming vampire that would roam our streets in the night.

Night covering is important, vampires are commonly thought to face doom in the sunlight. Carrying a clove of garlic and a crucifix may not seem like a bad idea either.

Vampires are first thought to have been well known doing the 18th century. Various renditions of the vampire concept have emerged over the years all over the world. While it's regarded as myth, perhaps there may have been vampire like practices among real people or cults.

Count Dracula is one of the most iconic vampires of our time, a fictional character created by Bram Stroker in the late 1890's. Since then a number of other novels, films, comics and games have been born around the tales of vampires. Fangtastic!
