Look, up in the sky,
Mushroom clouds shatter our peace.
Now, no one will sleep.

Hello, everyone,
@beelightfully has posted another great Haiku challenge this week. The prompt for this week is mushroom. Here's the link with the details, please participate if you can.

My first take on the prompt is a mushroom cloud, and there are many ways to depict this but I chose to focus on a volcano.

In April 2021, in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic, even as residents of the Caribbean island of St Vincent were being asked to practice social distancing and to stay at home, the La Soufriere Volcano erupted, emitting gas, sulphur and ash everywhere. It was the largest eruption the island had seen since 1902.

Sometimes when volcanos erupt, the clouds that rise up are said to resemble mushrooms, hence the above haiku.

My second interpretation focused on The Smurfs. Remember them? Those little, humanoid creatures were my favorite when I was a child. To describe The Smurfs in a haiku, I'd say:

Little blue creatures,
All decked in Phrygian caps,
In mushroom houses.

And finally I thought of the mushroom in the traditional sense.

Growing up in the countryside, I saw many mushrooms. They grew on the underside of old tree trunks and among bits and pieces of wooden manure. I would never touch them though because I was scared of them. It was folklore that mushrooms were jumbie (evil spirit) umbrellas.

And it didn't help, the fact that the ones I saw were eerily white, I guess, because mushrooms do not need a lot of sunlight to grow.

In this final Haiku, I thought of eerie white mushrooms and of the term mushroom in the sense of it being something that's growing, blossoming, expanding. And so, in this context, I wrote:

Mushroom in the dark
New life rising from the dead
Symbol of rebirth.

I'm biased with the Smurfs!

Phrygian caps

I had to look up this word though and I'm not sure about what context you meant it in - I'm probably being stupid? It has a nice ring to it though!

Funny that mushrooms had a scary vibe for you! I guess they can be - what lies beneath the surface can be scary stuff! Let alone them may be being poisonous!

Enjoyed this, hard to choose - I think I like the first one as it was so unexpected!

😂 I really couldn't let the Smurfs go, I had to sneak them in there. The Phrygian caps are the little hats they wear. I felt like I couldn't describe the Smurfs without them, and I could have used another word, I guess, but I kinda liked the ring too. lol
Thanks!
