Wow, amazing title on this one, eh? But the photos are going to make up for it. First, my sunflowers are blooming!
My wife @MediKatie likes sunflowers. We've had a lot of moves during our 15 years together, but she always manages to find somewhere to grow them, even if it's a pot on the windowsill. Currently, we're very lucky to have a back yard for growing flowers and food.
The sweet basil is ready, and it's tasty! I made a risotto the other day, and used some diced basil from the garden. It didn't need much - very flavourful and aromatic! Yum.
Yarrow, a common weed that grows around the world, can be used to stop bleeding. If you're badly cut while out in Nature, look for some yarrow. Chew some leaves and apply the wet mixture to your wound. It also comes in pink:
It's drought-tolerant so it stays green all Summer, even when the rest of the lawn has gone brown.
Here are the latest daily update photographs:
The potatoes are clearing out! I've got about 8 plants left, out of about 50 total. I won't have any for winter, so I'm going to try and pick up some big bags of potatoes at the local farmers market. If that doesn't work, I'll be hauling low-quality expensive potatoes back from the supermarket all Winter.
The tomatoes are starting to produce! Lots of flowers now, and a fair bit of fruit as well. Nothing ripe, yet.
A new crop of lettuce has begun! It's not yet visible in the daily photos, but won't be long. I also have a fall crop of carrots and peas started. I've eaten about half of my current carrot crop.
The beans are done, just 20 pods or so drying on the plants.
The squash and pumpkin plants didn't do very well this year, likely because we got Summer in Spring and Spring in Summer. I'll try those again in the Spring!
Beside the deck, I've got a couple pots of calla lilies, and 3 extra tomato plants. We're due for more heat over the next week, but who knows what will happen after that? Autumn is coming, and living up here in Northern Canada means I have to be realistic. I'm going to top these plants (remove the new starting growth) soon, so that they put their energy into the flowers/fruit, instead of more leaves and stems.
Another round of supply-chain disruptions and food shortages is beginning, so knowing how to grow food is more important now than it has been in many decades. With my gardening content, I hope I have inspired someone to grow some plants.
Keep on growing!
DRutter
Our sweetheart was sure adorable chattering away to me about the sunflowers. I picked off a petal and gave it to her, and she liked that. So precious :)
Wow what a nice flower! I love sunflower and daisies too. Here is a photo of a beautiful daisy flower.
Awesome post. Yarrow is a good move, and unfortunately, our tomatoes died. Lettuce is awesome, and that means you can grow spinach as well, which is high in iron. Great work!
Keep up the good work buddy. Your garden looks amazing.
