Magic the Gathering Trading Cards as Investment.
Some words First
I Collect Magic the Gathering Cards since 2000 with some breaks. Over the time there was a lot of pumps and buy outs in vintage cards of Magic cards.
After I realize there was a demand for that old card, I start to build a position. This was great because some of them grow up in value at this time. In general, it was up to today not a bad investment for me.
As an example. The Cards on the Pic ( on the left) at the top was some years ago to buy for 10$ each. Today they are worth for sell on eBay or trading card exchanges for around 200$ to 500$ each.
Some words to "What is Magic the Gathering"?
Magic is a game created in 1993. Over the year the Player base grows up to the year 2020 to around 10 Million Players ( maybe more or less is hard to tell). It's like other Trading card games, you can play it or collect it, or both. Over the years there come out many different sets with different print runs and Values.
Because there are some Cards very limited and people want them, they have some value.
What is the hot shit?
For sure the old cards ( Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Antiques, ...). But there are already really expensive. Some of them may be worth a look at some research.
I´m sure some of them have the potential to pump in the future. But to be realistic, i think that needs a lot of time.
If you are familiar with Pokemon cards, look at your favorite card at eBay. I'm sure you will be sad after that, depends on your age :)
"So your Article is shit and magic is a bad investment, I knew it"
Yep i would think the same at this point. But there is a type of investment in these cards, you don't need to know single cards. In Average, it gives a return of around 5%+ a year.
Do you want to know what it is?
Yes, sealed products. There are way more limited as the single cards ( in special the older ones) and the supply goes lower every year.
Some Examples:
Antiquities - Antiquities Booster Box - Booster Displays cheapest 25k + from 1994
Revised - Revised Booster Box - Booster Displays 6k + from 1994
"Pokemon First Edition base set sealed case" is around 100k to 250k USD from 1999
Ok, i know this card displays are very old. No way to get them today for cheap.
But today products get older every day too. As long they are in print, it's not worth buying them as an investment.
The print runs are in general around 1 up to 2 years. If they stop the production of a product, it's worth to look at it.
For example:
Kaladesh - Kaladesh Booster Box - Booster Displays from 2016. The print run ends around 2018.
The price was 2016 to 2018 around 80$ to 100$. Today its close to impossible to try to buy a box for under 190$ (English language)
This is way more as 5%. But there are also displays that need more time to go up in Value.
And this is not the only product. As far I know, there is booster box that goes under the buy price from release ( English language only).
