The Evolution of Video Games: From Pong to Virtual Reality

While the concept of games has been around for hundreds of years, the technology we use to play them has changed dramatically. While the game industry has gone through massive changes over the past few decades, a handful of titles have had the biggest impact.

From the rise of console gaming to mobile gaming, some of the most popular titles of all time have changed our lives forever. Here are just a few of them.

The Game That Changed It All (1973): Pong

What a game changer. This game is responsible for ushering in an entirely new era in video games. While most video games at the time were simple "shoot them with a gun" games, Pong was a unique title that brought us an entire new world of interactive games.

Pong quickly became a popular game, and soon after, the popularity of consoles like Atari led to a boom in the video game industry. This boom lasted for the next 20 years, and many modern gamers don't even remember a life without a console.

Nintendo 64 (1995): Super Mario 64

While most modern games were based off of Pong's success, Nintendo took it and created something truly special. Super Mario 64 brought the same idea of "shoot 'em with a gun" to the next level.

Mario's ability to explore new worlds and defeat dangerous creatures quickly made him a household name. He went on to play a role in some of the most iconic scenes of movies and television as well.

Sony Playstation (1994): Spyro the Dragon

Like with Nintendo, the Sony Playstation also helped usher in the next generation of video games. Spyro the Dragon was a game that brought us another incredible innovation in video games.

Spyro's world could be explored at every angle. Every object in the environment was a potential danger. Players could freely navigate the game environment and complete objectives on their own terms.

Nintendo Wii U (2012): Wii Sports

While Nintendo hasn't been the most successful gaming company over the past two decades, they've continued to innovate. Wii Sports was a revolutionary game when it launched, but it's continued to improve over the years.

Wii Sports was a great way for non-gamers to experience the thrill of playing sports. In fact, many kids don't even know how to play a video game before they learn to play Wii Sports.
