The judicial process for the creators of Beast Masters and the vulnerability of the video games dumped in NFT.
Last year @acidyo, one of the main developers and investors of #HIVE decided to liquidate his important wallet (in the good times of that token he accumulated a balance of more than 20 million dollars and currently has less than 50 thousand dollars) to dedicate himself to the development of Holozing an RPG and adventure game for both casual and competitive players, based on a classic: Pokemon.
The game offers many creatures to catch and train with healers to keep them alive and strong, while allowing you to master your chosen professions to craft, find and collect the perfect items with true ownership.
However some shortcomings of the game, the possibility of being hacked easily and other problems not foreseen by its developer/s led to the current police chronicle situation that I want to tell you about.
4 Argentinians arrested for millionaire scam with video games and cryptocurrencies
The defendants had been on the run since last year and were found in Rosario, Santa Fe province
Four developers, a Pokémon-inspired computer video game and the promise of profits in cryptocurrencies after making an initial investment. That was the cocktail of ingredients that led to the creators of Beast Masters being arrested this week in Rosario.
The prosecutor's office that has been investigating the case for a year accuses them of having stolen the funds of some 3,000 people who invested in the video game, which promised profits in cryptocurrencies and non fungible tokens (NFT). For their part, they are defending themselves by saying they were hacked.
What is Beast Masters?
Beast Masters is a Play-to-Earn (P2E or "play to win") game. As its name suggests, this type of video games are based on the premise that the user can get rewards for their progress; they can redeem them within the same game or even trade in the real world.
The title was developed by four young Argentinians, who were identified after their arrest as Gianluca Pagano, Ramiro Sammataro, Manuel Bahamonde and Gianfranco Scaldini.
The aim of the game - which never actually came to light - was supposedly to acquire and train characters ("beasts") similar to those in the Pokémon anime series. As an online game, players could face off, interact and trade digital artifacts in Beast Masters. However, something in the process did not go as promised.
The alleged Beast Masters scam.
Through the project's website, the developers of Beast Masters were offering a pre-sale of tokens and NFTs that would later have utility in the game. The tokens would serve as a unit of exchange in the video game.
Meanwhile, NFTs can be programmed to interact with various software, such as video games. Thus, being registered in a blockchain (such as Ethereum or BNB Chain) and being unique and unrepeatable, they are able to fulfill specific functions in that environment. For example, they can be used to strengthen a player's beasts or add accessories to them for better performance in their battles. In other words, they add value to the user's experience and are interchangeable for each other.
However, after raising approximately USD 2.5 million in the pre-sale, the defendants claimed to have been hacked. To avoid putting all the deposited funds at risk, they withdrew users' money to their personal wallets, they claimed.
Alleged return of funds to users.
Through Beast Masters Twitter, those responsible published steps to follow for the return of funds. In the comments, several users claim to have received a refund for their NFTs, but not for the tokens purchased, which represented a larger part of the investment.
Thus, the final amount they were left with was USD 600,000 (223 million pesos, according to the market price of the currency on Thursday, February 16).
If the illegal act of the defendants is confirmed, it would be a type of scam known as rug pulls. These consist of the developers of a project suddenly abandoning it, taking with them the funds that investors deposited. They are presented as serious and legitimate projects, but end up with the disappearance of their creators and the money of the people who put their trust in them.
The judicial process for the creators of Beast Masters.
After raids on several homes and the arrest of the four accused on February 9, the indictment hearing was held on February 14, in the city of Rosario. The process had begun with a complaint in December 2021 in the city of Buenos Aires, but was later transferred to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Fe when connections with the southern city of that province were detected.
At the indictment hearing, it was determined that they will be free to go through the upcoming process, although they were not allowed to leave the country and must appear before the judicial authorities once a month. They are not allowed to move the funds of several Metamask wallets and a restraining order was filed.
On the other hand, the defendants presented personal and family properties under bail. They are accused of fraud as co-perpetrators.

El juego ofrece muchas criaturas que atrapar y entrenar con curanderos para mantenerlas vivas y fuertes, al tiempo que te permite dominar las profesiones que elijas para fabricar, encontrar y coleccionar los objetos perfectos con verdadera propiedad.
Sin embargo algunas falencias del juego, la posibilidad de ser hackeado fácilmente y otros problemas no previstos por su/s desarrolador/es llevaron a la situación de crónica policial actual que les quiero comentar.

Cuatro desarrolladores, un videojuego de computadora inspirado en Pokémon y la promesa de obtener ganancias en criptomonedas luego de hacer una inversión inicial. Ese fue el cóctel de ingredientes que llevó a que los creadores de Beast Masters fueran detenidos esta semana en Rosario.
La fiscalía que investiga el caso desde hace un año los acusa de haber robado los fondos de unas 3.000 personas que invirtieron en el videojuego, que prometía ganancias en criptomonedas y tokens no fungibles (NFT). Por su parte, ellos se defienden diciendo que fueron hackeados.
¿Qué es Beast Masters?
Beast Masters es un juego Play-to-Earn (P2E o “jugar para ganar”). Como su denominación indica, este tipo de videojuegos se basan en la premisa de que el usuario puede obtener recompensas por sus avances; las puede canjear dentro del mismo juego o incluso comerciar en el mundo real.
El título fue desarrollado por cuatro jóvenes argentinos, quienes fueron identificados tras su detención como Gianluca Pagano, Ramiro Sammataro, Manuel Bahamonde y Gianfranco Scaldini.
El objetivo del juego —que en realidad nunca salió a la luz— supuestamente era adquirir y entrenar personajes (“bestias”) parecidos a los de la serie de animé Pokémon. Al tratarse de un juego en línea, los jugadores podrían enfrentarse, interactuar e intercambiar artefactos digitales en Beast Masters. Sin embargo, algo en el proceso no salió como se prometía.
La supuesta estafa de Beast Masters.
A través del sitio web del proyecto, los desarrolladores de Beast Masters ofrecían una preventa de tokens y NFT que luego tendrían utilidad en el juego. Los tokens servirían como unidad de intercambio en el videojuego.
En tanto, los NFT se pueden programar para interactuar con diversos softwares, como los videojuegos. Así, al estar registrados en una blockchain (como Ethereum o BNB Chain) y ser únicos e irrepetibles, son capaces de cumplir funciones específicas en ese entorno. Por ejemplo, pueden usarse para fortalecer a las bestias de un jugador o sumarles accesorios para un mejor rendimiento en sus batallas. Es decir que aportan valor a la experiencia del usuario y son intercambiables por unos por otros.
No obstante, luego de recaudar aproximadamente USD 2,5 millones en la preventa, los imputados aseguraron haber sufrido un hackeo. Para evitar que todos los fondos depositados se vean en riesgo, retiraron el dinero de los usuarios a sus wallets (monederos) personales, alegaron.
Supuesta devolución de fondos a los usuarios.
Mediante el Twitter de Beast Masters, los responsables publicaron pasos a seguir para la devolución de los fondos. En los comentarios, varios usuarios aseguran haber recibido un reembolso por sus NFT, pero no por los tokens comprados, que representaban una parte mayor de la inversión.
De este modo, la cifra final con la que se quedaron fue de USD 600.000 (223 millones de pesos, según la cotización de mercado de la divisa el jueves 16 de febrero).
De confirmarse el acto ilegal de los acusados, se trataría de un tipo de estafa conocida como rug pull (“tirones de alfombra”). Estas consisten en que los desarrolladores de un proyecto lo abandonen súbitamente, llevándose con ellos los fondos que los inversores depositaron. Se presentan como proyectos serios y legítimos, pero acaban con la desaparición de sus creadores y del dinero de las personas que confiaron en ellos.
El proceso judicial para los creadores de Beast Masters.
Luego de allanamientos en varios domicilios y la detención de los cuatro acusados el pasado 9 de febrero, se realizó la audiencia de imputación el 14 del mismo mes, en la ciudad de Rosario. El proceso había comenzado con una denuncia en diciembre de 2021 en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, pero luego se trasladó al Ministerio Público de la Acusación de Santa Fe al detectarse conexiones con la ciudad del sur de esa provincia.
En la audiencia imputativa, se determinó que transitarán el proceso venidero en libertad, aunque se les imposibilitó salir del país y deberán presentarse ante las autoridades judiciales una vez al mes. Tampoco pueden mover los fondos de varias wallets Metamask y se presentó una prohibición de no innovar.
Por su parte, los imputados presentaron inmuebles personales y de familiares bajo fianza. Están acusados de estafa en calidad de coautores.
