Hellblade, psychosis and schizophrenia in games

Hello dear Blurtians!

Video games are, among many things, an amazing way to tell a history and even more effective to reach those who have born in the technology and information era. Today I would like to tell you about the game Hellblade, Senua's sacrifice

Hellblade deeply and sensitively addresses the themes of psychosis and schizophrenia. The game follows the journey of Senua, a Celtic warrior who faces not only supernatural enemies but also internal battles within her own mind. The unique representation in Senua's Sacrifice lies in the development team's meticulous and respectful approach to the experiences of those living with mental disorders. The protagonist, Senua, constantly hears voices, and these voices are realistically incorporated into the game, providing players with a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by those living with psychosis

In addition to the audiovisual representation, the game uses gameplay mechanics to simulate the experience of schizophrenia. Senua encounters illusions, perceptual distortions, and mental challenges that create an immersive atmosphere, leading players to experience, to some extent, the complexities of Senua's mind. The focus on Senua's personal narrative and the internal struggles she faces contributes to a unique and poignant experience, educating players about the nuances of psychosis in an engaging and empathetic manner.

By addressing such sensitive and stigmatized themes, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice stands out as a notable example of how video games can be a form of artistic expression and a powerful tool for promoting understanding and empathy towards mental health. The game offers a unique opportunity for players to reflect on the complexity of mental experiences, challenging stigmas and contributing to important conversations about mental health in contemporary society.

I've played this game this year and I really think this is an absolute masterpiece, as someone who also struggle with some mental issues, despite being different from the ones retreated in the game, it is really outstanding to see how well this kind of thing could be addressed in the game.

My advice is you should definitely give this game a try!
