One sunny afternoon, while building a sandcastle with her father, Mandy spotted a little girl with bright red braids sitting alone on a swing. Taking a deep breath, Mandy, with her usual shyness, approached the girl.
"Hi," Mandy said softly. "Can I play with you?"
The girl, whose name was Lily, smiled. "Sure! Do you like building sandcastles?"
From that day on, Mandy and Lily were inseparable. They built sandcastles, played hide-and-seek, and shared stories under the shade of the old oak tree. Mandy learned that friendship could fill the void she felt, and she wasn't alone anymore.
One evening, as they were gazing at the stars, Lily pointed at a particularly bright one. "That's my mommy's star," she said. "She winks at me every night."
Mandy looked up at her own star. "Maybe that's your mommy winking at you too," she said with a smile.
The idea sparked a warmth in Mandy's heart. She realized that her mother's love wasn't gone; it lived on in the stories her father told, the stars that shone above, and most importantly, in the love she shared with her father and her new friend, Lily.
Mandy grew up knowing that love comes in many forms, and her family, though small, was filled with an abundance of it.
