Visama Babara of Brazil
Synoeca cyanea, commonly known as marimbondo-tatu in Brazil, is a social wasp with a colony.
Native to Brazil and Argentina, S. cyanea is one of the largest and most aggressive species of social wasp and is feared by people in many rural areas. It begins its colony formation in early spring and continues until the nest is abandoned. Throughout its life, S. cyanea obtains sugary substances and animal carcasses for food and wood pulp for its nest. S. cyanea is also known for its potent venom, which is sufficient to induce hemostatic activity. Usually, nests are found in Restinga and Atlantic rainforests. However, S. cyanea has been known to forage and nest in mangrove areas.
