In Nigeria, most people—whether consciously or unknowingly—abide by a kind of unwritten law that is so fundamental that it has become customary in Nigerian homes. Let me explain about Sunday Rice.

The majority of Nigerian houses have rice every Sunday; if you don't eat it, you'll sense a lack of something in your body. The most common Sunday rice dish is white rice with stew or sauce, although other options include fried rice, coconut rice, jollof, and more. In every region of the nation, rice is a cuisine that is widely consumed and has established itself as a staple meal.

As said previously, most Nigerian households have made it a custom to cook and consume rice on Sundays, regardless of their religious beliefs or social status. The custom of eating Sunday rice is one that I carried over from my Nigerian upbringing and continue to follow now that I live alone.

The fact that I have witnessed so many friends and relatives who I have visited at some point carry out the Sunday rice custom also verifies to me that it is not a custom exclusive to my immediate family. While certain families may be an exception to this rule, it is nevertheless true that most Nigerian houses prepare rice on Sunday.

Why do Nigerians observe the Sunday rice custom? The reason behind this is pretty clear: rice was formerly thought of as something unique and was expensive to cook. As a result, Nigerians felt compelled to eat it at least once per week, especially on Sundays when everyone was expected to be at home.

Sundays have a unique vibe among the other days of the week, which is perhaps why family and friends decided to create the special rice treat on this day. Nigerians have been eating rice on Sundays for a very long time, and it has evolved into an integral part of their daily lives.
