Lunching in Old Havana

in food •  last year

Hello, friends of Hive. I want to tell you about my days in Havana, specifically in Old Havana, a place that left me with a lot of impressions. The truth is that this site has an charm that is difficult to ignore. Strolling through its cobbled streets and getting lost among its architecture is an experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Of course, as in every story, there are lights and shadows. And in this case, the shadows become evident in the prices, especially when we talk about food. I experienced a disappointment in a place that promised a lot but turned out to be more expensive than I could have expected. However, as often happens, a few blocks away we find a more affordable place, where we could have lunch.

I was in the company of my cousin's mother-in-law, since it was my first time in the place and I knew absolutely nothing about the place. That's when we got to Café Habana, a modest place divided in two by a counter. The left half was dedicated to coffee and the other to food. Although the menu wasn't very extensive, the attention and quality were undeniable.

While we were deciding what to order for lunch, we decided to have something first. In my case, a Parranda beer, 100% Cuban, was my choice. My companion preferred a grapefruit juice. When it came time to order, I leaned towards the classic shredded beef and rice, also known as old clothes. My companion chose the same thing, but added some sides, in this case, boiled sweet potato.

I must point out that the dishes we were served were well presented and had an aesthetic that denoted care in their preparation. Although they were simple, they managed to conquer our palates. The combination of flavors, presentation and quality of the food were more than satisfactory. All this together with the tranquility of the place, makes this a perfect place to spend a good time to enjoy both drinks and food.

Despite the small initial disappointment in terms of prices, Café Habana turned out to be a pleasant find. The delicious food, the simple but cozy atmosphere, and the company of my family made this lunch a memorable experience in the middle of the streets full of history of Old Havana. Without a doubt, a place I would recommend, and if I have the opportunity, I would return on future visits.
