Is there anyone who would argue that today's generation of filmmakers is exceptional? Many directors have made their marks in the field of filmmaking, using everything from stunning visual spectacles to original comedy and styles. Many have evolved such distinctive directing techniques that their films are instantly recognizable as their own. I only included working directors on my list, or directors that are still actively producing films. I took into account a director's body of work as well as their impact on the industry and creative originality. As always, I wouldn't characterize this as the all-inclusive list, but there is no doubting the exceptional caliber of these active directors.
#5 – STEVEN SPIELBERG
As one of the most accomplished cinema directors in history, Steven Spielberg has cemented his position. He has won twice and been nominated for six Oscars for Best Director. He has helmed some critically praised movies, but he has also helmed some of the biggest box office hits in movie history. His filmmaking credits date back to the 1970s, when he gave us "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," two incredibly popular films. The magnificent "Raiders of the Lost Ark," two "Indiana Jones" sequels, "E.T.," and "The Color Purple," which he also directed, were all among his best work during the 1980s.
Spielberg helmed two "Jurassic Park" films, as well as the Oscar-winning "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan," so the 1990s were equally as good. Since then he's directed a wide array of films such as "Minority Report", "Catch Me if You Can", "War of the Worlds", "The Adventures of Tintin", and "Warhorse". There are a number of forgettable movies scattered throughout that I haven't highlighted, and it's fair to say that Spielberg has started to prioritize presentation above content. Yet, you cannot deny his contributions to cinema, and I was unable to omit him from this list.
#4 – MARTIN SCORSESE
Martin Scorsese's life underwent a significant change when he transitioned from the priesthood to cinema. He began directing short films, but "Mean Streets," released in 1973, was the first film to really show audiences the grit and aesthetic that would come to be associated with a Scorsese production. He has worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro on some memorable projects. He has received five Best Director Oscar nominations and one win. "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" are only a couple of the early Scorsese movies. Nevertheless, Scorsese only released "Raging Bull" during the 1980s. Then in 1990, "Goodfellas," often regarded as the ultimate gangster movie, appeared.
We also have "Cape Fear," "The Age of Innocence," and "Casino" from the 1990s. The mob historical drama "Gangs of New York" that Scorsese produced in 2002 received more favorable reviews than his subsequent films, "The Aviator" in 2004 and "The Departed," which won him his only Academy Award. With the excellent family drama "Hugo" and the underappreciated psychological thriller "Shutter Island," he has recently ventured into new genres. Because so many of Scorsese's films have similar dark and violent themes and tones, he might not be liked by everyone. But there is no questioning his talent as a filmmaker, and I adore the fact that he is branching out into other genres.
