The overuse of chemical fertilizers started during the 'green revolution' even tho there was nothing 'green' about it. Intensive farming has ruined swathes of land making it virtual desert. I have been buying organic since the 80's to avoid fake fertilized 'food'. Now I've moved on to growing my own organically. It's the only solution.
