It's Nice to Have the Freedom to Say Whatever You Want... BUT...

in expression •  last year

Freedom of speech.

It's often a hot-button topic for people.

We want the freedom to say/post/display whatever we feel like, and we hate the idea that someone could potentially tell us "NO, that's not OK!" and stop us.

image

And therein, oftentimes, lies the problem.

We might say that it is our "right" to have freedom of expression, but that doesn't give us the "right" to be agreed with or even to be "protected" from a bunch of people thinking we're sociopathic nutters.

After all, if we expect to have the "freedom" to express something extremely crude or controversial, then others have the "freedom" to express that they think we're sociopathic nutters.

It's a blade that cuts both ways.

Some might cite "do no harm," but who gets to decide what "harm" looks like? To what degree is a "hot button" situation left to escalate before it could be considered "harmful?"

image

It strikes me that the whole "freedom of expression" debate often has less to do with the actual "content" at hand, than with the psychology of the people purveying that content.

As I approach my 63rd birthday and have spent most of my adult life (and then some!) as a keep student of the human psyche and the human condition, one of the things that's increasingly evident is that whenever I encounter a situation that's growing close to reaching a "flashpoint," there are INVARIABLY disproportionately many people at the scene who subscribe to the "This is my opinion, and anyone who disagrees is clearly a retarded idiot (and should not be allowed to exist on this planet)!" school of life philosophies.

Which is borderline sociopathic, regardless of the subject matter or opinions being discussed!

image

Opinions are opinions, and I definitely believe we should have the right to our opinions. But we don't have the right to be "right." That's something we have to earn, and we have to be open to the possibility that we were actually wrong, or that what we think should be true of everyone is actually just true of us or a very small number of individuals.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your Sunday!

How about YOU? How do you feel about freedom of expression? How do you feel about right to "express" vs right to be "agreed with?" How often do you think situations that become heated/violent are more the result of the PEOPLE involved, rather than the SUBJECT matter? DO leave me a comment — engagement matters! Communities are built because people INTERACT with each other through the content that's created! This is SOCIAL media, after all. So share your opinion, be part of the conversation! I do my best to answer all worthy comments!

Exactly, matey.
But without free speech, that right to be wrong, will never be known.

Absolutely! And we wouldn't have near as much entertaining fodder to talk about!

...people take seriousness, far too seriously.

....follow my @bittenapple account if you want to see how 'The Creation' REALLY came about - I've got the inside goss, from a Penguin.
(part 1 coming up later on...don't miss out! lol)

Good to see you! - more intelligent life on blurt is never a bad thing.

Good to see you, too! I see we both were on hiatus for a while...

Seriousness??!?? You know I take my hippie libtard leanings VERY seriously...

I had to get off social media and write independently.
My narcissistic demons were messing around, and trying to dictate who was in the driving seat of my own ego....They're now securely chained up and obedient...
( letting them out to have a play now and again, works out very well for all concerned !..)

ANYWAYS !
You can't be like, an actual, real life, hippy libtard, I call BS !..lol

...There are a few snowflakes on here that I've melted with logic, reason, humor - and my oh, so very gentle, non aggressive style... (now pulls tongue out of cheek)...
And they are still sulking about it...seriously.
Talk about the inability to grow up....go figure...(well you don't need to, obviously, you know all this stuff, already).
Now THEY are the real libtards......lol

....the stereotypical view of the oversensitive, entitled, soft, emotionally dis-regulated millennial, seems to be very accurate, unfortunately. ...(bad for everyone, but especially for them).

They're the only age group that will toss a coin and call 'the edge' rather than 'heads' or 'tails'...and that's because they're really clever, you see...

Gonna be a very interesting next few months on here...
Well, I hope so.

It often helps me to remind the word "respect"...

There are people that are open to well founded disagreement and there are others, usually many many more, that won't let you express your opinion, they tend to be monologuists therefore deaf to what you have to say.

I stick with the respect mood as far as it's possible and step back when we arrive to a not ending point.

Cheers

Agreed! Respect is an important part of civil discourse. It's often also the key difference between "making a point" and merely "silencing dissent," as the path to "proving" a point.

This is a topic that is repeated over and over again and in my opinion only because the communists currently in power disguised as neo-liberals, right wingers and democrats simply want to question once again that white is white and black is black just to make people believe that white is black. And push us their censorship "for our good"

The entire human history, ancient and modern, proves unequivocally that freedom of speech is a superior and key value, and with all the negative aspects of freedom of speech where it is possible to actually violate someone's rights or abuse, much worse crimes and much more monstrous things have always happened under the veil of propaganda and blocking of free speech.

No need to look far, all Nazism was based on propaganda and blocking expression, all communism, the entire Middle Ages and all the monstrosities of the church, fanaticism are all the fruits of censorship and blocking freedom of speech. Millions of victims.

And what are they trying to tell us now? That censorship has its good sides because it allows you to avoid "misleading people with fake news, which can supposedly lead someone to danger" or offending someone's "religious feelings, worldview" etc. oh so "very scary"

The truth is that these are sporadic cases.

Any form of censorship is the highest evil and the fruits of censorship are not only the growth of fascist and Nazi ideologies but also a fertile field for all those who want to earn money from the misfortune of other people because psychopaths and fuckers feel best in such a society. ;]

I enjoy the difference in opinion, it just sucks when their opinion is based on echo chamber confirmation bias, there's no having a civil discussion with a slave of this magnitude.

  ·  last year  ·

That's the age-old dilemma, isn't it? Opinions not backed by actual knowing or wisdom or direct experience. Seems like humanity has been doing that for millennia, starting with religions...

But you're right. Reminds me of an old saying from Texas local politics (and probably elsewhere): "Don't confuse me with the facts when my mind is already made up!"

The test for being retarded is if you are harmed by opinions. Another test for being retarded is if you can't tolerate others hateful thoughts, the thoughts you hate the most, that or being a sociopath/psyco.

  ·  last year  ·

As an extension of which, an awful lot of people — of ALL stripes and opinions — would qualify for the "retard" label.

  ·  last year  ·

Indeed, one principle of stupidity is that almost everyone underestimate the number of stupid people.

I'm for giving the retards all opportunity that I can to expose themselves, if that means telling them I think it's retarded or they're retarded than hopefully they bite!
