Ethereum Classic Hit by Third 51% Attack in a Month

in etc •  4 years ago

The Ethereum Classic blockchain was attacked by 51% on Saturday evening, the third attack this month known to the mining company Bitfly, which also witnessed its first attack on August 3.

The attack resets more than 7,000 blocks, or mining over two days, according to a tweet shared by Bitfly. The first two attacks returned 3,693 and 4,000 blocks, respectively.

Stefan Luhaja, technology coordinator at ETC Labs, said in a private message with CoinDesk that he found the timing of the attack "extremely suspicious" because it happened just a day after Core Ethereum developers met on "robust innovation" in evidence of blockchain working.

In particular, the leading organization behind the Ethereum Classic network, ETC Labs, announced its strategy to protect the network from additional attacks last week, including defensive mining that aims to stabilize the network's diminishing hash rate and resist future 51% attacks.
