As time goes by, the smartphone is becoming a major part of our lives. The smartphone is a connection hub, a commerce platform and is increasingly monitoring our health. Artificial intelligence (AI) and data analysis using inputs from phone sensors and cameras can help identify health problems in patients, and may make care more accessible in the digital age.

Smartphones constantly monitor us and take in biometric data. New apps and fitness trackers can use the data to help us identify problem areas in our health. The smartphone already has a camera and microphone that can be used to identify problems with abnormal heartbeat, skin conditions and other maladies. The smartphone can be used to make quantitative and qualitative healthcare decisions that may be augmented using AI. The gold-standard for medical device approval in the United States is FDA approval, and several companies are seeking FDA approval for their smartphone applications

Companies like Teledoc which specialize in remote healthcare reporting and monitoring. It is possible to get health metrics and make measurements for blood pressure and heartrate using video footage that can be analyzed by AI and other technologies.

Binah.ai, an Israeli technology company is working on getting FDA approval for a smartphone application that checks vital signs for a patient by focusing on the eyes and the Reflex app utilizes the smartphone camera to check health vitals based upon pupil reactions.

Currently, most health apps on the smartphone are used for informational purposes. The next generation will be FDA-approved apps that will turn the smartphone into a medical device. Companies like Binah.ai will use the improving smartphone cameras and microphones to gather information and send it to providers and AI who will make determinations, thus improving the reach of preventative care. This is worth the cost of investment and will help millions, as cellphone usage is ubiquitous in society.
