Living in crowded cities, when we step out of our homes we are exposed to high levels of pollution and there is no way that we can escape that, because we cannot stop breathing. What we will create we have to breathe the same air. The number of vehicles on the road are increasing day by day, the carbon emissions from the industries, plastic pollution, soil erosion, so much damage is happening and it is increasing day by day. We are exploiting our nature, left right and center.
While we can do so many things to reduce this pollution and it's a long way to go before, we start seeing results, in the mean time we need to focus on what are the immediate things that we can do. After all it impacts our health, by the time we will be able to reverse the situation, there would be ample damage done and it may also be irreversible. The outside may take long but the inside is something which is easy to manage and totally in our control to change and make it better for us. It is important that we take care of the Air we breathe in our home as well.
Many people think that once we are home, we are in safer zones and we are cutting out the pollution. That's not the case, the things we use in our house contribute to a large extent towards the quality of air we breathe. Specially we Indians who are in regular habit of lighting incense sticks. We do not realize that the smoke of incense increases the levels of chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are harmful for health. At one point of time, I used to light many incenses at my home, but now I have reduced, though ideally, I should stop, but being an Indian there are too many other mind conditions that keeps me going.
If someone at our home is in a habit of smoking, then that's not healthy. The cleaning products that we use in our homes also contribute to polluting the air, because they are all full of harmful chemicals. The other major problem is the Mold, which are found in almost all the old houses, they get formed on walls, floors, ceilings.
It's not that we cannot tackle this problem, as I said these are things that are totally in our control and we can make it better.
The few things that we can look at to manage our Indoor Air are:
- Have as many indoor plants as possible and take good care of them. Specially in bedroom. It is good to have some plants, because they absorb the polluted air and give us oxygen. Having plants in bedroom also promotes good sleep. This is my favorite one, because not only do they help keep the air clean, but the greens around also are soothing for the eyes and they bring up so much show to our space.
- Have Air purifiers at home if the level of pollution is high. If there is mold forming in the house then it is very important that air purifiers are installed in home, because they very effectively manage to remove the carbon monoxide, and other harmful chemicals from the space.
- Good Ventilation is important. Specially in the morning time, having the sunlight come into the home and clear the air. If we keep our homes closed then it may be more dangerous than the pollution outside, because then the pollution builds up and there is no space to release it. You will see the difference in air when you open up the windows and doors of the home. It also brings a shift in our energy level and moods, because the fresh air comes in.
- Avoid using heavy chemical products. The detergents and cleaning agents we use in our home can be easily replaced with more organic products. It is easy to make them at home as well, without using any harmful chemicals. We do not need a phenyl to clean the floor. A little of salt and lemon added to water can be used as a cleaning solution and absolutely safe for the environment.
These are some of my tips for a better and cleaner environment that we can create for ourself to stay healthy.
