I don't remember if the bosses of Warner and HBOMax announced this series before the premiere (or after) of "The Suicide Squad", but I was waiting for it from the beginning. Since watching the first GotG, I am a fan of James Gunn and I am watching all the new productions bearing his name. Both Marvel (yes, even despite my reluctance towards the MCU), DC, series or projects that were created on the occasion - eg "Brightburn". I knew that even if I didn't like Peacemaker, James was too experienced and talented a creator to do anything below a certain level. Especially when he got a free hand from the studio and has rather unhindered access to all the resources of the rich DC library. After the film's premiere, I fell in love with John Cena's hero. He is an actor with great potential who works both as a muscular bad boy and comedian. He can show a man with a broken psyche even better, which I found out only on the occasion of this series. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, I will elaborate on this in the next paragraph.
The series is probably a prequel to the movie, but it does not really matter - the success of this brand meant that we will definitely get more seasons. If someone bothers that the main character should not be alive, then ... Well, to paraphrase the words of my friend Karol - if what we are watching is good and interesting, then the canon can be put up your ass. I don't usually prefer this approach (ie, as long as it doesn't disturb the "main quest" of the story), but the older I am, the more I appreciate it. "Peacemaker" is a kind of TSS, but on a microscale - something like the series "The Mandalorian" within the SW universe. Feel that it is one and the same world, but due to the budget, the scale is much smaller and the plot is less effective. In this case, we have significantly developed characters that are not as simplified as in the movie (for obvious reasons - the author has no time limits, so he can better fulfill his vision - especially on streaming, where episodes can have different lengths depending on his needs) and a similar threat. Amanda Waller's small squad is tasked with eliminating the Aliens who are butterflies and take control of their hosts. Something like Venom or Carnage. Besides, we have small threads about new heroes - for example the actress known from "Orange is the New Black", Peacemaker's relationship with his toxic father and a few others. Each of them maintains at least a good level, and some of them are amazing. Especially those related to dealing with our own problems that sit in our head. The director has a great talent for combining different types of humor with drama elements. Kind of like combining a good psychology series with an adult comedy like Trailer Park Boys. He perfectly juggles with word games, sharp dialogues, situational humor or black humor (which is like hands - not everyone has them, hehe), which smoothly moves to serious threads, showing mental problems. Something like Eiichiro Oda in "One Piece" or Toriyama in DBZ (although Akira does it much worse than the above mentioned creator). Besides, we have a lot of nice references to the DC world (calling Batman a cunt), some very strong and expressive, but I prefer not to talk about them. If we add talented actors who are properly led by the director, we will get a real bomb. As I wrote in the previous paragraph, John Cena is perfect for this role - he can perfectly show various sad emotions. Not only with facial expressions or body play, but also with emotions and invisible, spiritual aspects. It is clearly visible in the scenes where he drinks to forget, while playing the piano (in which he showed the full spectrum of emotions) or during his relationship with his father, the Eagle, or his masked friend. In the first case, you can see how he is afraid of his father, and in the second and third, how much he lacked friends, understanding and tenderness. It is very convincing and authentic. I myself have had problems in my life and how they are shown here (ie very real and natural) hit me like a hard blow with my hand to the face.
The other actors, as I mentioned, are also of good quality. However, I do not want to talk about them, so as not to spoil your impressions. The scenario and some situations may not be particularly original (or at least most of them), but they can surprise you. I could compare Gunn to Togashi, the author of HxH at this point. In one interview, the latter said that he likes to show known patterns in a slightly different way. James in this case is not literally the same (I emphasize that no one would accuse me of untruth in the comments later), but during the screening you will see the point in this comparison. This can be seen, for example, in the scenes with the mascot of this series - Peacemaker's eagle. I have seen various films and series with such a character, but it is difficult for me to cite a similar case (or at least as good, although I have a problem here, because it is difficult for me to recall any, except for GotG or TSS - raccoon and weasel). At first it looks unnatural (in the sense of his behavior, movements - which is not surprisingly, birds do not behave like that towards people), in a few later scenes also, but with each episode, we get used to it more and more. The eagle is incredibly lovable and adds a lot to itself.
As for the special effects and action, I will come back to the example from "Star Wars". You can see that the studio gave him a lot of money - all the elements made in CGI or spectacular scenes could be shown in the cinema without any problems and no one would complain that this is the level of television. I looked closely at most of them and found nothing that I could reasonably find fault with. Okay, some scenes look pretty cheap, but it doesn't really matter - that was the convention + what's supposed to look decent, that's what it looks like. There is also a lot of blood, some scenes can be disgusting, sometimes my girlfriend looked away (not because of the blood, but because of the disgusting scenes) while reacting eloquently, but that is also standard for this director. Likes to be direct and literal. Music is standard for James movies - the soundtrack is very good! Thanks to him, I remembered some great songs that I used to like, but forgot about them (e.g. "Love Bomb Baby", "You Can't Kill My Rock 'n Roll" and a few others) or met new ones (intro to series I fell in love with or "Choose me" from Japanese Band-Maid). The guy has very good taste and knows what song suits the situation.
All in all, alongside "Daredevil", it's the best superhero series I've ever seen. At best, Marvel can learn from them how to create them. I look forward to the sequel and hope to come back on HBO asap. It would have been lovely if he had stuck with DC for longer and ditched Marvel after GotG was over. The Mickey Mouse Corporation restricts it too much with its family friendly policy, and DC needs original and high-profile titles. Not only in its movie universe, but also to promote HBO Max, which is not doing very well as a streaming platform. Therefore, James will have extremely comfortable working conditions there. As for the rating, I rate the first season at 8.5 / 10. It's worth buying a subscription for one month to watch this series - it's worth the money!

Od obejrzenia pierwszej części GotG, jestem fanem Jamesa Gunna i oglądam wszystkie nowe produkcje, które są sygnowane jego nazwiskiem. Zarówno Marvela (tak, nawet mimo mojego niechętnego stosunku do MCU), DC, seriali, czy projektów, które powstały przy okazji - np. "Brightburn". Wiedziałem, że nawet jeśli postać Peacemakera mi nie przypadnie do gustu, to James jest zbyt doświadczonym i utalentowanym twórcą, by zrobić coś poniżej pewnego poziomu. Zwłaszcza gdy dostał wolną rękę od studia oraz ma raczej nieskrępowany dostęp do wszystkich zasobów bogatej biblioteki DC. Po premierze filmu, zakochałem się w bohaterze Johna Cena. Jest aktorem z dużym potencjałem, który sprawdza się zarówno jako umięśniony bad-boy, czy komik. Jeszcze lepiej umie pokazać człowieka z popsutą psychiką, o czym przekonałem się dopiero przy okazji tego serialu. Ale nie uprzedzajmy faktów, rozwinę to w kolejnym akapicie.
Serial jest chyba prequelem względem filmu, ale tak na dobrą sprawę nie ma to większego znaczenia - sukces tej marki sprawił, że na pewno dostaniemy kolejne sezony. Jeżeli komuś przeszkadza, że główny bohater nie powinien żyć, to... Cóż, parafrazując słowa mojego kumpla Karola - jeżeli to co oglądamy jest dobre i ciekawe, to kanon można wsadzić sobie w dupę. Zazwyczaj nie preferuję takiego podejścia (tzn. o ile nie zaburza "głównego questu" historii), ale im starszy jestem, tym bardziej je doceniam. "Peacemaker" to taki TSS, ale w mikroskali - coś jak serial "The Mandalorian" w ramach uniwersum SW. Czuć, że to jeden i ten sam świat, ale z uwagi na budżet, skala jest dużo mniejsza, a intryga mniej efektowna. W tym przypadku mamy znacząco rozwinięte postacie, które nie są tak uproszczone jak w filmie (z oczywistych powodów - autor nie ma ograniczeń czasowych, przez co może lepiej zrealizować swoją wizję - zwłaszcza na streamingu, gdzie odcinki mogą mieć różną długość, w zależności od jego potrzeb) oraz podobne zagrożenie. Mały oddział Amandy Waller ma zadanie zlikwidować Obcych, którzy są motylami i przejmują kontrolę nad swoimi hostami. Coś jak Venom, czy Carnage. Poza tym mamy drobne wątki dotyczące nowych bohaterów - np. aktorki znanej z "Orange is the New Black", relacji Peacemakera z jego toksycznym ojcem i kilka innych. Każdy z nich trzyma co najmniej niezły poziom, a niektóre są rewelacyjne. Zwłaszcza te dotyczące radzenia sobie z własnymi problemami, które siedzą w naszej głowie. Reżyser ma świetny talent do łączenia różnych rodzajów humoru z elementami dramatu. Coś jak połączenie dobrego serialu psychologicznego z komedią dla dorosłych, jak "Trailer Park Boys". Doskonale żongluje grami słownymi, ostrymi dialogami, humorem sytuacyjnym, czy czarnym humorem (który jest jak ręce - nie każdy je ma, hehe), którymi płynnie przechodzi do poważnych wątków, pokazującymi problemy psychiczne. Coś jak Eiichiro Oda w "One Piece", czy Toriyama w DBZ (choć Akira robi to dużo gorzej niż w/w twórcy). Poza tym mamy dużo fajnych nawiązań i odwołań do świata DC (nazywanie Batmana cipą), niektóre bardzo mocne i wyraziste, ale wolę o nich nie mówić. Jeżeli dodamy do tego utalentowanych aktorów, którzy są odpowiednio prowadzeni przez reżysera, to dostaniemy prawdziwą bombę. Jak napisałem w poprzednim akapicie, John Cena doskonale odnajduje się w tej roli - rewelacyjnie potrafi pokazać różne smutne emocje. Nie tylko mimiką, czy grą ciała, ale również emocjami i niewidocznymi, duchowymi aspektami. Świetnie to widać po scenach jak pije, by zapomnieć, podczas gry na fortepianie (w której pokazał pełne spektrum emocji) albo podczas relacji ze swoim ojcem, Orłem, czy jego zamaskowanym przyjacielem. W tym pierwszym przypadku, widać jak boi się swojego ojca, zaś w drugim i trzecim, jak bardzo brakowało mu przyjaciół, zrozumienia oraz czułości. Jest bardzo przekonywujący i autentyczny. Sam miałem problemy w swoim życiu i to jak zostały one tutaj pokazane (tj. bardzo prawdziwie i naturalnie), uderzyły mnie jak mocny cios dłonią w twarz.
Pozostali aktorzy, jak już wspomniałem, prezentują również dobry poziom. Nie chcę jednak o nich mówić, by nie zepsuć Wam wrażeń. Scenariusz i niektóre sytuacje może nie są szczególnie oryginalne (a przynajmniej większość z nich), ale potrafią zaskoczyć. Mógłbym w tym momencie porównać Gunna do Togashiego, autora HxH. Ten w jednym wywiadzie powiedział, że lubi pokazywać znane schematy w nieco inny sposób. James w tym przypadku nie jest dosłownie taki sam (podkreślam to, by potem nikt mi nie zarzucał nieprawdy w komentarzach), ale w trakcie seansu dostrzeżecie sens w tym porównaniu. Widać to np. po scenach z maskotką tego serialu - orłem Peacemakera. Widziałem różne filmy i seriale z taką postacią, ale trudno mi przytoczyć jakiś podobny przypadek (lub przynajmniej równie dobry, choć i tu mam problem, bo trudno jest mi sobie przypomnieć jakiś, pomijając GotG, czy TSS - szopa i łasicę). Początkowo wygląda on nienaturalnie (w sensie jego zachowanie, ruchy - co w sumie nie jest niczym dziwnym, ptaki się tak nie zachowują względem ludzi), w kilku późniejszych scenach również, ale z każdym odcinkiem, przyzwyczajamy się do niego coraz mocniej. Orzeł jest niesamowicie sympatyczny i dodaje bardzo dużo od siebie.
Jeśli chodzi o efekty specjalne i akcję, to ponownie wrócę do przykładu ze "Star Wars". Widać, że studio dało mu dużo pieniędzy - wszystkie elementy wykonane w CGI lub efektowne sceny, można byłoby bez problemu pokazać w kinie i nikt by nie narzekał, że to poziom telewizji. Przyglądałem się dokładnie większości z nich i nie znalazłem niczego, do czego mógłbym się w sensowny sposób przyczepić. Ok, niektóre sceny wyglądają dość tanio, ale nie ma to żadnego znaczenia - taka była konwencja + to co ma wyglądać porządnie, tak wygląda. Jest też dużo krwi, niektóre sceny mogą być obrzydliwe, czasem moja dziewczyna odwracała wzrok (nie ze względu na krew, ale obrzydliwe sceny), reagując przy tym wymownie, ale to również standard dla tego reżysera. Lubi być bezpośredni i dosłowny. Jeśli chodzi o muzykę, to jest standardowo, jak na filmy Jamesa - soundtrack jest bardzo dobry! Dzięki niemu przypomniałem sobie o kilku świetnych utworach, które kiedyś mi się podobały, ale zapomniałem o nich (np. "Love Bomb Baby", "You Can't Kill My Rock 'n Roll" i kilka innych) albo poznałem nowe (intro do serialu, w którym się zakochałem albo "Choose me" od Japońskiego zespołu Band-Maid). Facet ma bardzo dobry gust i wie, jaki utwór pasuje do danej sytuacji.
Reasumując, obok "Daredevila", to najlepszy serial o superbohaterach jaki widziałem. Marvel może się co najwyżej od nich uczyć, jak się powinno je tworzyć. Nie mogę się doczekać kontynuacji i mam nadzieję, że powróci na HBO jak najszybciej. Byłoby pięknie, gdyby związał się z DC na dłużej i porzucił Marvela po zakończeniu GotG. Korporacja z Myszką Miki go za bardzo ogranicza swoją polityką family friendly, a DC potrzebuje oryginalnych i głośnych tytułów. Nie tylko w swoim filmowym uniwersum, ale również w celu promocji HBO Max, które nie radzi sobie zbyt dobrze jako platforma streamingowa. Dlatego też James będzie miał tam wyjątkowo komfortowe warunki pracy. Jeśli chodzi o ocenę, to pierwszy sezon oceniam na 8.5/10. Warto kupić subskrypcje na jeden miesiąc by obejrzeć ten serial - jest wart swojej ceny!
