Recently, I came across a meme that mentions how anime and series used to be watched. In the past, when we had plenty of time, we watched a dozen or so episodes a day, today sometimes we watch half an episode... When I first saw it on Facebook, I understood that I've been watching it for several years (apart from watching very good anime on weekends or in the week I watched as part of catching up on the "plan 2 watch" list that half an episode of anime is watched, because I want to relax 20-25 minutes playing e.g. "Cyberpunk 2077". Asia fell asleep in the middle of the penultimate episode, right after Nami and Nojiko's flashbacks, so we'll cover the finale today.
The arc with Arlong is the best so far. Most touchingly, the actors showed themselves from the best side, generally the peak of the series' quality level. Garp's journey and Coby's development was great too, especially since it's another mistake (aside from ignoring the pirate hunters) by Eiichiro Oda - the scenes of him training and developing were treated as extras when he should at least pretend that Coby is supposed to be one of adult Luffy's biggest rivals... But I won't nitpick about these events, it happened a long time ago. My only complaint is that the pink-haired one didn't get much time afterwards. Well, but it's a typical mistake - in "Naruto", in turn, the main character received less gifts (and airtime) than Sasuke, a lover of young edgy-lords and some teenage girls, whose biological conditioning leads to badboy. Garp's conversation with Zeff was great - admittedly I've seen it many times in different anime, in different configurations, but never in a live action adaptation.
The duel with Arlong was a bit weak, I felt similar vibes as from watching those better, fan-made adaptations of DB, Naruto, etc. There was no tragedy, but for a moment I remembered the feeling of artificiality from the beginning of this series. It's a question of budget constraints and director's skills, but I'm betting mostly on the former. The actors did it! Especially Nami, who played all the scenes perfectly. Both baby Nami and adult. I saw a lot of emotion on her face, and the impression was heightened by her voice acting. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's some amazing talent or something, but you can tell she was committed, she cared about the scene well, and the director knew how to run it. The result was a cynical bitch who didn't even flinch an eyebrow as she told Arlong to throw Luffy's body into the water (yes, I know it was intentional or someone would have saved him, but I'm talking about her acting). Luffy and Zoro's actors did their best too, but they're not even half as good as SH's thief. Later events in Arlong Park only prove that the girl has talent. I will not be surprised how this role won the attention of people whose job it is to find such talents. Anyway, every actor won on it - all anime fans will remember for years that OP was the FIRST good anime adaptation!
My personal highlight, however, is Arlong. Even before the premiere, I was sure that McKinley Belche would do the trick, but it impressed me the most. The facial expressions, the voice, that ominous click of his "tick tick tick tick" is so... animalistic (we're talking about Mermaids after all), horrible, we know something's about to happen. And a great, very atmospheric accent. You can hear that he knows how to use his voice. I once read that black athletes, actors and celebrities stand out from their white counterparts. I don't remember all 3 reasons for this, I only remember one - testosterone (they don't have the same problems as white people who lack this hormone) and factors ... let's say historical and social - like every society, we inherit certain things after previous generations or we have to deal with their problems that have been passed on to our generation). Finally, I also felt that fishmen are such black people of this world - they were or are slaves too, some people treat them like smelly pigs who are unworthy of being in the same room with the human elite, they also have to deal with piracy and criminal activities, because no one gave no other option. Arlong as the boss of East Blue just does the job. Not only is he a big shark that will fuck the house up on your head if you piss him off, but he's also smart and don't even try to fool him because you'll end up like most smart people - getting less than he offered you to start with.
I will write about Bellmere's death tomorrow, because Asia fell asleep a few minutes after the sad end of Nami's flashback. Today, and while you are reading this, in 2-3 hours we will start watching the last 1.5 episodes of OP.
Ostatnio natrafiłem na mema, w którym wspomina się, jak dawniej się oglądało anime i seriale. Dawniej, gdy mieliśmy mnóstwo czasu, oglądaliśmy kilka-kilkanaście odcinków dziennie, dziś czasem oglądamy po pół odcinka... Jak go pierwszy raz zobaczyłem na Facebooku, to zrozumiałem że tak w sumie oglądam od kilku lat (poza oglądaniem bardzo dobrych anime w weekendy lub w tygodniu, które oglądałem w ramach nadrabiania listy "plan 2 watch") że ogląda się pół odcinka anime, bo chcę się zrelaksować 20-25 minut grając w np. "Cyberpunk 2077". Asia zasnęła w połowie przedostatniego odcinka, tuż po retrospekcjach Nami i Nojiko, więc finałem zajmiemy się dzisiaj.
Wątek z Arlongiem jest najlepszy z dotychczasowych. Najbardziej wzruszający, aktorzy pokazali siebie od najlepszej strony, generalnie peak poziomu jakości serialu. Podróż Garpa i rozwijanie Coby'ego też wyszło świetnie, tym bardziej że to kolejny błąd (pomijając zignorowanie łowców piratów) Eiichiro Ody - sceny, jak on trenuje i się rozwija, były traktowane jako dodatek, podczas gdy powinien przynajmniej udawać, że Coby ma być jednym z największych rywali dorosłego Luffy'ego... No ale o te wydarzenia nie będę się czepiał, to było bardzo dawno temu. Mam jedynie pretensje o to, że różowowłosy nie dostał zbyt wiele czasu potem. No, ale to typowy błąd - w "Naruto" z kolei, główny bohater dostawał mniej prezentów (i czasu antenowego) niż Sasuke, miłośnik młodych edgy-lordów i niektórych nastoletnich dziewczynek, których biologiczne uwarunkowania, ciągną do badboya. Rozmowa Garpa z Zeffem była świetna - co prawda widziałem ją wiele razy w różnych anime, w różnych konfiguracjach, ale jeszcze nigdy w adaptacji Live Action.
Pojedynek z Arlongiem wypadł trochę słabo, czułem podobne wibracje co od oglądania tych lepszych, fanowskich prób adaptacji DB, Naruto itd. Tragedii nie było, ale na chwilę przypomniałem sobie uczucie sztuczności z początku tego serialu. Kwestia ograniczeń budżetowych i umiejętności reżysera, ale stawiam głównie na to pierwsze. Za to aktorzy dali radę! Zwłaszcza Nami, która doskonale zagrała wszystkie sceny. Zarówno mała Nami, jak i dorosła. Widziałem na jej twarzy pełne mnóstwo emocji, a wrażenie było potęgowane przez jej grę głosem. Nie zrozumcie mnie źle, nie mówię, że to jakiś niesamowity talent, czy coś, ale widać, że była zaangażowana, zależało jej na dobrym przedstawieniu tej sceny, a reżyser wiedział jak ją poprowadzić. W efekcie dostaliśmy cyniczną sukę, której nawet brew nie drgnęła, jak powiedziała Arlongowi, żeby wyrzucił ciało Luffy'ego do wody (tak, wiem, to było celowe działanie, bo ktoś by go uratował, ale mówię o jej grze aktorskiej). Aktorzy Luffy'ego i Zoro też się postarali, ale nie są nawet w połowie tak dobrzy, jak złodziejka SH. Późniejsze wydarzenia w Arlong Park, tylko udowadniają, że dziewczyna ma talent. Nie zdziwię się, jak tą rolą zdobyła uwagę ludzi, których zadaniem jest odnajdywanie takich talentów. Zresztą, każdy aktor na tym wygrał - wszyscy fani anime przez lata będą pamiętać o tym, że OP było PIERWSZĄ dobrą adaptacją anime!
Moim personalnym highlightem jest jednak Arlong. Ja już przed premierą byłem pewny, że McKinley Belche da rady, ale zrobił na mnie największe wrażenie. Mimika, głos, to jego złowieszcze klikanie "cyk cyk cyk cyk", jest takie... zwierzęce (w końcu mówimy o Syrenach), okropne, wiemy że coś się zaraz stanie. No i zajebisty, bardzo klimatyczny akcent. Słychać, że wie jak się posługiwać swoich głosem. Kiedyś przeczytałem, że czarnoskórzy sportowcy, aktorzy, celebryci, wyróżniają się na tle białych odpowiedników. Nie pamiętam wszystkich 3 powodów, z których to wynika, zapamiętałem tylko jeden - testosteron (nie mają takich problemów, co biali ludzie z brakiem tego hormonu) i czynniki... powiedzmy historyczno-społeczne - tak jak każde społeczeństwo, dostajemy w spadku pewne rzeczy po poprzednich pokoleniach lub musimy zmagać się z ich problemami, które przeszły na nasze pokolenie). W końcu też poczułem, że ryboludzie to tacy czarnoskórzy tego świata - też byli lub są niewolnikami, niektórzy ludzie traktują ich jak śmierdzące świnie, które są niegodne przebywania w jednym pokoju z ludzką elitą, też muszą się zajmować piractwem i działalnością przestępczą, bo nikt im nie dał innej możliwości. Arlong jako boss East Blue po prostu robi robotę. Jest nie tylko wielkim rekinem, który wpierdoli ci dom na głowę, jak go wkurwisz, ale jest też inteligentny i nawet nie próbuj go oszukać, bo skończysz tak jak większość chytrych ludzi - dostając mniej niż ci oferował na początku.
O śmierci Bellmere napiszę jutro, bo Asia zasnęła parę minut po smutnym zakończeniu retrospekcji Nami. Dzisiaj, a w chwili gdy to czytacie, za 2-3 h zaczniemy oglądać ostatnie 1.5 odcinka OP.
