A post-pandemic increase in the industrial activity which added demand for electricity, was the responsible for the energy shortage experience by China. This occurred just as the coal supply started to decline (see article. China had been imposing more regulations in the coal production that had been reducing its output.
Coal is a fossil fuel and its production and consumption are very polluting. However, at the same time, it is a very reliable source of energy. Human activity ultimately needs energy and that is what drives our access to out main needs. It is great to invest, research and develop cleaner, renewable forms of energy, however, in the precess, we cannot stop the use of fossil fuels for energy generation. Energy output derived from wind and solar in not always reliable and the battery technology necessary for storage is in its infancy.
