Documenting More Shrinkflation

in economy •  2 years ago

$4 still buys a bag of chips here in BC Canada. The product is the same, but every few months, the size of the bag subtly changes.

Ignoring the French on one of the bags (we have two languages on a lot of our packaging in Canada), it won't take you long to spot the difference.

Here they are up close:

That's the old bag, in use until very recently. 220 grams.

And there's the new bag, at 212 grams. Same product, same price, but now with one handful of chips less.

The pricetag is the same but you get less. Shrinkflation is a common (if you know where to look) sign of price inflation. Companies don't loudly advertise they're doing this, because it's sneaky. It's harder to spot than normal food inflation, where the size/amount stays the same while the price goes up.

At 60 cents for each little slice of bread, a peanut butter sandwich is no longer a cheap option!

Shrinkflation is showing up and impacting us all, but it's insidious, so you have to be watching closely or you won't notice your grocery funds aren't going as far.

Not many people notice this type of inflation.

So true. I guess that's why certain companies do it... easier to get away with.
Very sad to see food inflation so high. Officially it's more than 1% per month, which means it's even higher than that. Compounding the suffering of the poor, elderly, disabled, etc. Government caused this problem and definitely will never be the solution.

Things are reducing and the prices are increasing. It is happening everywhere

-3.6%
At that rate in a few years the bag will be gone :P

Thanks bro! At $1 and counting, the Blurt community clearly agrees with you.... lol I guess inflation hasn't come to payouts on the blockchain yet. Or silver bullion.

Unfortunately it has not. Been a real frusturating year for me financially. So my girl and I are switching gears and thinking of opening a weed shop with what little investment money I have left. I ll certainly keep you posted on that.

Wouldn't that be an adventure?
I could consult :))

Yes, that is very much why we are probably going to do it. International Travel sucks since the world's gone to hell. Most air tickets have doubled. As a filthy non-vaxed heathen travel double sucks depending on where you are going. Plus I've lost a ton of money this year in crypto and precious metals. So the new adventure will most likely be a weeeeeed store! hahaha!

But yes, that would be excellent. Drutter cannabis consultation! Already thanking you in advance. I've already got a few questions. I'll make them into posts, they'll be interesting for all Blurt Weed Enthusiasts like you and I! :)

That's quite true, let's do that.
I also have some connections in the canna underworld I can draw from for information and advice.
This reminds me of something I hadn't thought of in a while. MediKatie and I turned down an opportunity to manage a gray market cannabis dispensary in Vancouver a few years back. Man, we went through some interesting times!
Anyway, looking forward to it, should you decide to try this adventure.

The moment in time is interesting when you can find both packages in the store, but eventually it fades from memory. Those party size bags used to be really big, now they're just kind of big but called party size so you just feel like a big pig when you finish the whole bag haha. The worst shrinkflation has been when our vegan cheeze started using oat milk :(
