There's a very interesting movement that's happening on the landscaping scene and it's called Foodscaping or Edible Landscaping. This is something that I feel familiar with since I lived half of my life in a rural village. This is something very common in places where the people put more value on vegetable plants and fruit bearing trees instead of the usual ornamental plants; mostly observed in provinces.
The idea of foodscaping is the mixing of edible plants with ornamental plants on a landscape or gardens.
Imagine your front yard that is teeming with beautiful flowers while there are tomatoes and basil plants that you can just pick and be added to your pasta dish. That's the kind of life that I wanted to live in the near future, a healthy & more importantly, a sustainable lifestyle.
Currently, I'm staying in a condominium development where foodscaping is being encouraged. A few months ago, the building management advised the landscape team to modify the gardens surrounding our building to add vegetables together with the existing ornamental plants.
I've seen how they attempted to plant as much vegetables as they could but not all of their efforts were successful. So far, the only vegetables that survived are eggplants & pumpkins. Let me show you some photos.
A few weeks from now, these pumpkins will grow 3x its current size and will be ready for harvest.
Also, the eggplants have started bearing its fruit.
Too bad, the tomatoes didn't survive. I guess, foodscaping is much more complicated because there are plants that doesn't go along with each other.
Anyway, it's amazing how things are changing for the betterment of the world that we are living in. Just imagine if all of the residential houses and commercial spaces use this approach in their gardens. It will be a delicious solution to the food shortage that's happening across the planet.
I hope to see more edible landscapes to emerge very very soon!
The eggplants and pumpkins in the garden look very fresh. We also have several eggplant trees in our garden. They contain small eggplants but are quite tasty to eat.
