Jimmy, a Really Good Dog

This is Jimmy. Was Jimmy I should say. I had to put him down exactly one week after I moved to my new home in upstate New York. The photo was taken in front of my last home about two years ago, when my neighbor's house was for sale, and Jimmy could still jump for joy. This shot isn't all that great a shot, but it captures his exuberant zest for life in a way that makes me smile and be grateful that he spent so much of his life in mine.

I still miss him terribly, four months after he crossed the rainbow bridge. I really want to get another dog! Alas, I have only a tiny yard, and there are no dog parks in this county, not a single one. The closest dog park is 40 miles away in Pennsylvania!

For @ajerkoff's previous good fortune contest, about doing good deeds in the community to build community (something like that), I had intended to talk about my desire to get a dog park constructed in this town. This would be a wonderful way for dog owners to meet each other, and for dogs to get some real exercise while socializing. If there were a dog park, I would get a dog. I will also get a dog if I manage to find a second property outside of town, but near my house in town. The dog could run and explore, and lay in the sun in that yard. My plan is to get an older dog, a dog no one else wants, maybe even one that has been in a shelter for a long time, so that I can bring more love into the world by sharing my abundant life with an animal that has not had good fortune.

Back to Jimmy. Here's the last shot I ever took of him, as I held him on my new front porch and waited for the grim reaper to arrive.

Jimmy was a really good dog.

I could scatter his ashes there. I miss that dog! Maybe it's because I have no other dog now, first time in my life really.
