The Djerdap gorge through which the Danube flows on its way to the Black Sea is full of beautiful views and untouched nature. The gorge itself is divided into two parts - Mali and Veliki Kazan. The translation of the names will most likely cause an surprise. The narrower and steeper part of the gorge is called Veliki Kazan, which literally means big cauldron or big boiler. The next, somewhat wider part of the canyon is called Mali Kazan, again literally translated into small cauldron or small boiler.

The name cauldron or boiler is used because the waters of the Danube in this area flows very quickly, forming strong currents that make the waters of the river look like it is boiling. At the location of Veliki Kazan, the Danube has the narrowest width on its lower course of only 150-170 meters, but the depth of water is amazing 70 meters. Just a few kilometers away, the Danube forms a huge lake-like surface whose width is almost 2 km.
