The first way to combat depression is to learn about the different kinds of depression. There is a major difference between minor depression that will not leave you in any distress and major depression that leave you feeling worthless, helpless, and isolated. Some people may not even know what kind they have until they find themselves in a hospital ward or on the floor of a doctor's office suffering from depression.
The second way to deal with depression is to do some deep thinking and seek medical advice. Once you know that what you are dealing with is depression, then you will be in a much better position to decide on the best course of action to take for dealing with it. In some cases you may need professional help and some may be able to overcome their depression on their own, this does not always work though. If you do decide to attempt solving your problem on your own you need to be sure that you do not try to solve too many problems at once as you may end up giving up too soon or being overwhelmed by the many things that you need to deal with in order to succeed.
The third way is to just keep going and keep painting. There is no limit to the depth of your talent or how much pain you may be feeling, but there is also no limit to the power that you have inside of you that can overcome depression. Sometimes we may not be quite sure what caused our depression or why we are still alive, and this is when it may be helpful to remember that your life is worth living and that you are loved. Sometimes you may even find that you have the gift of happiness and joy again. Life is filled with so many ups and downs that it can be easy to get depressed, but remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You do not have to let your life be consumed by depression, you have so much more that you can do.
The fourth way is to understand that sometimes people have been depressed for years and think that they are doomed to live like that forever. They may feel like they are worthless, ugly, and they will never find a significant other or a good job. However, if you look at the situation from a positive perspective, then you will realize that it is only temporary. Your situation may have become worse because of a sudden incident, but you must remember that life can take its natural course. Also, you should remember that the problem doesn't have to stay with you for ever, there are ways to fix your situation and you may find that you are happier after fixing it.
Resolving depression may take some time, but it will be worth it. You will be happier and you may get back into the workforce and find better work. Don't give up on your dream of having a happy life, always believe that you can do it!
Depression is not a minor issue in health sector. It is one of the major health problems which doesn't get proper attention. Until a major depression causes any physical symptoms, usually a person doesn't go to a doctor.
You have mentioned some steps to overcome or treat depression. Those are indeed necessary. For treating a depression we need help from a specialist as well as help from ourselves.
One thing I just want to add. Having a faith i.e. religion may help some people in overcoming the depression.
