Good morning, dear friends, and welcome to another beautiful new week.
The Antioch church pastor Ignatius referred to himself as Theophorus, or God Bearer. He was led in chains by a group of soldiers to Rome after admitting that Christ resided in his heart. He was eaten by lions for his unwavering faith in God there in the Colosseum, in front of thousands of applauding spectators. When Perpetua, a 22-year-old mother and baptized Christian, was jailed, it was because she would not worship the gods of the Roman Empire. Her brother and mother took care of her young boy while she was incarcerated, until circumstances compelled her to give him up.
When her pagan father paid her a visit in prison, he pleaded with her to give up her religion so she could survive, but she refused. Straightening her hair and clothing, she faced the raging bull in the amphitheater with composure, knowing that she would die honorably for her faith that had brought her home. Under the altar of heaven now rest the souls of those who were killed for sticking to their witness of God's Word. They beseech the Lord, questioning when He will exact their revenge. They receive white robes in Revelation 6 and are urged to continue sleeping peacefully until their fellow earthly servants are killed and ascend to paradise.
"Sing to the LORD a new song—His praise in the assembly of the godly. Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King. Let them praise His name with dancing, and make music to Him with tambourine and harp. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the afflicted with salvation." - Psalm 149:1-4"
