Does the antichrist exist as a spirit or as a man? In both! Even while the antichrist is a man, as the book of Revelation makes abundantly clear, the antichrist's spirit is currently at work in the society we inhabit and will eventually give rise to the man. John stated that the antichrist's spirit was already at work in today's passage. People started to rise even then to deny Christ's reality and the redemption He had come to win. John accuses those individuals of lying.
We have to acknowledge that we subtly reject Jesus if we are sincere. We may contest the veracity of His Word, come up with reasons not to read the Bible or pray to Him, refuse to give alms or tithes to the needy, or remain mute in the face of injustice—all without openly rejecting His offer of eternal life. The spirit of antichrist is among us when we know what is correct to do yet choose not to do it. Check your heart now. In what place have you rejected Jesus? He will respond to your contrition with healing love and restoration once you have said, "No!" to Him.
