It takes spiritual mothers and fathers to raise up disciples of Jesus. These are seasoned Christians who have followed the Lord for a lifetime and have encountered setbacks, bruising, and brokenness. They understand what it means to live in God's grace and peace and how to honor Him in their accomplishments. Instead of acting as though they are experts in their field, these seasoned saints are assiduous learners in the faith-based curriculum.
It is wise of us to search for more senior friends who are deserving of our respect. Their intellectual curiosity pushes us to think differently, and their modest heart draws us in. Our mentor's relationship with Jesus is what enables them to guide us in the faith. Seek a servant of the gospel rather than a self-styled guru. We follow only those who follow Christ first. Who should I follow to gain wisdom tomorrow?
What virtuous behaviors do you observe in other sincere disciples of Jesus? What do they do when they have free time? Look for opportunities to be creative and inspired as you deepen your relationship with Christ. Find out from your spiritual parent what books they study and how they commit themselves to the moral principles found in Holy Scripture. You take on the qualities of those around you and become what you read. Acquiring wisdom is deliberate; it is not coincidental.
Pray with other prayer-aware people if you wish to improve your prayer life. Study with those who understand how to correctly interpret the Bible if you want to increase your knowledge of it. Join people who discreetly help others in Jesus' name if you want to learn how to be a humble servant of His. Get around single people who are content in Christ if you want to learn how to be content as an adult. Ascend to the pinnacle of your profession by surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals.
Make it your main priority to imitate Christ above everything things. Others will recognize that you are someone worth following as you become more and more devoted to the Lord. Accept this honor as a chance to return the favors that kind people have shown you so freely. You have an obligation to raise your adopted children well when you take on the role of spiritual parent to them in Christ. Yes, you follow Jesus' example, and they follow yours!
