Is This A Slippery Jack? Or Am I Going to Die? ☠️☠️

Oh my goodness it's sooo beautiful in the forest today... Very wet, still and with mushrooms busting from the pine needles, like this little amanita muscaria.

Yes, the cover and title were clickbait for anyone who fell for it. I definitely know that amanita muscaria is not a slippery jack. Keep reading to find out what might be.

I've been out foraging more saffron milk caps, which I discovered cost 55 a kilo at the Vic Market in Melbourne. I was there yesterday as I was visiting Dad in hospital.

As it's been raining I've had no issue finding saffies at all. I left heaps for others. I'm not interested in selling them as it encourages others to profit from what should be a free gift.

I also found some sticky buns or slippery jacks. Don't worry, I would NEVER eat any mushroom I wasn't 110 percent sure about.

People get scared of mushroom foraging but you just need to be uber careful and if there's any doubt, don't eat it! I'm 95 percent certain these are slippery jacks but I'll do a little more digging first. They certainly have a very mucussy top. Apparently you peel them too to avoid tummy upset.

I was talking to my Dad who said my Nana used to pick and eat the amanita muscaria - @qwerrie might be interested in this. She was from Germany and migrated after the second world war. She's dead now so I can't ask her. I'm still too scared to try them but if you boil them for fifteen minutes first then get rid of the water, they are perfectly edible. ☠️

I met a guy in the forest who was picking them to dry to put in his tea. He was also microdosing psilocybin out there, which must have made his forest trip even better. We talked about the different chemicals in muscaria - one is good for anxiety and depression. Fascinating. Made me want to study chemistry.

One day I'll pluck up the courage to try them.

On a side note, we have been eating a lot of saffron milk caps and seem to be getting headaches. We aren't entirely sure if the two are related but we can't find any literature at all on this, so wondering if it's anyone's personal experience?

What are some of your cool experiences with mushrooms?
