In our History lessons we learned about the great king Darius who ruled the land of Persia. He was known as a Great king because in his time he build up many new projects which helped not only the Persian empire to expand but also welcoming more trade opportunities.
The site of Persepolis that we visited in Iran was one of those examples which reflected his visionary skills. It also had a reflection of a lot of Egyptian art work and art work from the regions around. These historic places have always intrigued me a lot, and I have had the opportunity to visit one of the world's such greatest sites.
The majority of the Persepolis site has been built up on a terrace platform. Persepolis was a Symbol of power and in this place they celebrated one of their most important festival Nowrooz - the Iranian New Year.
This is the staircase which leads up to the platform on which the site of Persepolis is built up. From the steps itself you will understand the magnitude of this place, they have been made from huge blocks of stones, and quite an exercise in itself climbing more than 100 steps. There are 2 such steps opposite to each other.
This is called as the Gates of all Lands. It is said that visitors had to wait here till they would get permission to enter into the courtyard.
The Eagle griffin. In the Iranian culture Eagle is considered to be an auspicious bird. On the Iranian national airline also you will see a symbol like this of an eagle.
This wing bull structure, majorly you will find them at all entry points. There were used on the gates, as they are considered to be guarding protective spirits and a symbol of power in the culture.
There were many pillars and columns in the site.
The Rulers then always wanted to show their power, another symbol of power. The Horse is used as a symbol of Purity and divinity in the Iranian culture
This is called the unfinished gate. The structure has been left unfinished, not sure what possibly could have been the reason.
The 100 column Hall, it is the largest chamber in Persepolis. It is said that in this place the King had meetings with the military officers, and there was a place for audience seating as well. Truly majestic.
On the mountain tops were the royal tombs.
You can see the different art work on the walls. There are symbols all over the walls, which has some or the other significance of Power and Divinity.
It has been one of the best Archeaolgical site I have visited till date.
The place is huge and you would need a full day, if you want to explore the place well. I have shared just some of the main pictures of the site.
I believe that the structures of those times were much more grand then what we make now. Thinking of it that they were all man made and no use of technology and machines it is truly a marvel.
Hope you all enjoyed visiting this historic site of Perspolis.
