South Korean Prosecutors Buy Blockchain Analytics Tools in Bid to Bust ‘Crypto Money Laundering’
I find this to be a slightly bizarre announcement. We must assume South Korea has its own secret services, so why are they putting spyware services out to tender? That would also mean having to protect themselves from having their spyware leak info. Maybe the NSA or GCHQ, or even Israeli Unit 8200, are not such good information-allies.
Law enforcers and judiciary staff have been using a monitoring tool that was first deployed in prosecutors’ offices nationwide in April 2021. But it says this tool cannot currently “identify virtual currency addresses generated by foreign exchanges.” The office claimed that the new software will be able to plug this gap.
That rather admits they have little, if any, extra-territorial reach - for now.
Not very covert.
Maybe that's the point, that it needs to be inserted into a legal capability so that future cases are not smothered in "national security" bullshit.
