There is a tradition in parts of Italy of throwing old things out of the window to usher in the new year. This "lancio dei cocci" was originally supposed to be old crockery and kitchenware, but could easily escalate into broken microwaves, fridges and televisions. It is unwise to park your car in the streets where such customs persist.
The symbolic act of discarding the old to give space to the new can now be extended to the crypto world. Not quite the same visceral joy of smashing things up, but a new platform will now let you throw away your worthless NFTs.
The platform has so far purchased over 9,300 no-longer valuable NFTs that previous owners can count as losses to reduce taxable capital gains.
“Think of us as Web3 junk removal,” it says on the website.
I hope they have some dramatic sound effects of crockery hitting pavement.
Happy New Year!
