Many Coursera courses are still free, you only need to pay for a certificate if you really need one; there are also some where you can study the materials but only do the tests if paid.
yeah, their free-dom has become more opaque, as they obv wish to make some money, but there are even courses where you can sign up, learn from all the materials, but not submit marked work - so you still get the knowledge, just not the proof.
