Craving a rich, chocolatey spread without the added preservatives and excess sugar found in store-bought versions? Try making Nutella at home! This easy, homemade recipe is healthier, customizable, and packed with the natural goodness of hazelnuts and cocoa.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups raw hazelnuts
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • 2-3 tablespoons neutral oil (e.g., hazelnut oil, sunflower oil)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Roast the Hazelnuts

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Spread the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and roast for 10-12 minutes until fragrant.
    • Once cooled, rub the hazelnuts with a clean kitchen towel to remove most of the skins (don’t worry if some remain).
  2. Blend the Hazelnuts

    • Add the hazelnuts to a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend until they form a smooth paste (this can take 5-10 minutes). Scrape down the sides as needed.
  3. Add Remaining Ingredients

    • Once the hazelnuts are creamy, add cocoa powder, powdered sugar, melted dark chocolate (if using), vanilla extract, salt, and 2 tablespoons of oil.
    • Blend again until smooth and well-combined. Add more oil if needed to adjust the consistency.
  4. Taste and Adjust

    • Taste your homemade Nutella and adjust sweetness or cocoa according to your preference.
  5. Store and Enjoy

    • Transfer the spread to a clean, airtight jar. Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.
