My Experience Using HBD (HIVE-Backed Dollars) to Buy Coffee at @cafefonda in Rosarito, Mexico

Recently I took a trip to Rosarito, Mexico for the latest annual rendition of @hivefest. It was an epic time as always, with many familiar faces, and also some great new ones. One of those new faces was @manuphotos, an absolute legend who manages the @hivecuba community, among many other things. During the event, @manuphotos was able to convince a nearby coffee shop to accept HBD payments in-store! He successfully onboarded @cafefonda (Cafe De La Fonda), who began taking payment immediately using the @keychain and @v4vapp applications. Over the next few days @hivefest attendees were flooding the place, ordering hundreds of dollars worth of coffee and pastries using HBD for payment.

Above is a look at @mynewlife walking out of Cafe De La Fonda on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. He and I filmed a video at the cafe, showcasing the ability to buy coffee easily using HBD. He has not released the video yet, but I saw a preview and it looks AWESOME. Stay tuned for that release!

Cafe De La Fonda may be the most upscale coffee shop in the area, offering an array of coffee products using freshly ground Colombian beans as well as pastries and other cafe style foods. They already had the infrastructure ready to begin implementing HBD payments thanks to a tablet at the counter. It was a no-brainer for @cafefonda to begin accepting payment, with dozens of nearby visitors eager to give them business. Below is a photo of @arcange getting his @keychain ready to pay for a coffee.

Over the week I stopped by @cafefonda four days in a row. Below is a look at the payments I sent to @cafefonda, on-chain. On one of my visits I tried one of their special drinks called Cafe de Limonada. It was one of the most interesting things I tried while traveling around Mexico. It consisted of fresh squeezed lemonade mixed with iced coffee, about a 50/50 split. Essentially like an Arnold Palmer… but with coffee instead of iced tea. I thought it seemed weird at first, but I gave it a try and it had a top notch flavor profile… and not something I’ve seen at coffee shops around the US. Since then, I've been adding a squeeze of lemon to my coffee back home.

Below is a look at an Iced Caramel Latte that I ordered. You can see @arcange, @buttcoins and @detlev sitting at the table out front drinking their coffee. Throughout the course of @hivefest, if you stopped by Cafe De La Fonda, there was a high chance of seeing fellow HIVE users spending their HBD and helping the circular economy grow. Overall it was an awesome experience being able to use HBD for coffee. The payments settled quicker than the time it takes to use a credit card and quicker than using cash and waiting to receive change. I simply scanned a QR code within @keychain and sent the amount owed. Within seconds the payment settled and my coffee was on the way.

Creating a circular economy is crucial to growing the HIVE ecosystem and creating use-cases for HIVE. The concept of HBD makes HIVE a perfect tool for bolstering tokenized circular economies, and @cafefonda is working proof of just that.
