1. Gather Your Ingredients: You'll need oils (such as coconut oil, olive oil, or almond oil), lye (sodium hydroxide), water, and any additives or essential oils for fragrance.

2. Safety First: Working with lye requires caution. Wear protective gear like gloves and goggles, and work in a well-ventilated area.

3. Prepare Your Workspace: Set up your workspace with all the necessary equipment, including a scale, thermometer, mixing bowls, and a soap mold.

4. Mix Your Oils: Combine your chosen oils in a mixing bowl. Heat them gently until they're liquid and then let them cool to around 100-110°F (38-43°C).

5. Prepare the Lye Solution: In a separate container, carefully mix the lye with water, stirring until dissolved. Be cautious, as this mixture will get very hot.

6. Combine Oils and Lye: Slowly pour the lye solution into the oils, stirring continuously. This will cause a chemical reaction, turning the mixture into soap.

7. Add Fragrance and Additives: Once the mixture reaches trace (a thick, pudding-like consistency), add any essential oils or additives like herbs or exfoliants.

8. Pour into Molds: Pour the soap mixture into your chosen molds. Silicone molds are popular for their flexibility and ease of use.

9. Cure the Soap: Leave the soap to cure for 4-6 weeks in a cool, dry place. This allows excess water to evaporate, resulting in a harder, longer-lasting bar.
