Modelo 77

Depending on my mood, I sometimes prefer to watch films that shed light on the dark times of the past, often involving political crimes or struggles for freedom. On rare occasions, I can point to movies that shed light on the dark side of war, but I don't want to lump war movies into the same category, as war movies often involve everyone making a special effort to create their own hero.

Modelo 77, which was released in 2022, was one of the films that fit into the first category I gave as an example. The movie, which sheds light on the prison conditions in Spain's history, is set in 1977 and after.

There have been times in the past when many countries and their citizens have felt the difficulties in enforcing the law but have not been brave enough to speak out. The story of Modelo 77 shows the rulers and people of the country the poor conditions of the prisons of the past and the fact that the rules set by the guards were applied in prisons. Or rather, if we say that it tries to show it, I would be in the right approach.

Even if you are a criminal, having certain personal rights and trying to live is one of the most human needs. When your freedom is restricted for a period of time due to the crime you have committed, you wait for the sentence to expire and prepare yourself for the next life. It is unacceptable to be subjected to second or even third sentences depending on the crime committed.

This is exactly the situation for the prisoners in the story of Modelo 77. Instead of being punished for the crime committed, being subjected to endless punishments, being deprived of the right to life, being subjected to torture, leads to the point of rebellion. Rebellion is a justifiable initiative that includes demands for criminal rights, amnesty, improvement of prison conditions, etc.

It is inevitable that undesirable events will occur during the struggle for freedom. There are plenty of such unintended incidents in the movie. The efforts to keep those on the outside informed about what is going on inside are appreciated during the viewing. However, I do not find the demand for amnesty justified as long as there is a crime committed. If there really is a crime committed and a fair trial has been held, the punishment for the crime committed should be served to the fullest.

The character of Manuel (played by Miguel Herran), who lit the fire of rebellion in the prisons, was the most valuable name in the movie. I had last seen the actor in the TV series La Case De Papel, and in his new role, he successfully reflects the rebellious personality with his prisoner appearance.

The movie Modelo 77 is remarkable as one of the productions worth watching with its image that sheds light on the conditions of prisons in the history of Spain. I recommend it to those who like movies of this genre. For those who don't, it can be quite boring.
