Today's song is While Shepherds Watched by the Victor Oratorio Chorus in 1914.
Early phonograph records did not originally have a standard spin speed. Edison Discs were intended to spin at 80 rpm on an Edison phonograph. The earliest phonographs from the United States Gramophone Company spun at 70 rpm. Ultimately the industry settled at 78rpm records, though there isn't a clear reason as to why. Whatever the reasoning, these early records were limited in length and typically could hold no more than 4 to 4 1/2 minutes of audio per side, depending on whether the record was 10 or 12 inches in diameter.
