Definition of Black and White
Black and white in photography is the creation of monochromatic images using photographic techniques. Using a traditional film camera or digital camera, the artist is exposing image media, such as film or digital image sensors and light. This light in black and white affects the image medium in such a way as to leave a permanent imprint of the scene on the media. This media is then processed to create a final image or photo.

Then Hachette Magazine in Popular Photography stated that black and white photos are as follows: “Black and white, often works for one reason, simplicity. It's nonchromatic tonal spectrum can reduce bias of color to a pattern of black, white and grays the (sic) reveal that elements of texture, line, form, and light with unmatched clarity.” it contains a tonal nonchromatic spectrum that reduces color bias for black, white, and gray patterns so as to reveal elements of texture, line, shape and light). So it can be concluded that by using a black and white display, the colors on the color spectrum can be reduced so that the elements of texture, line, shape, light, and the resulting brightness tend to be different and the color clarity looks simpler.

Black and white photography is more inclined to the process of making photos using negative film, while black and white photos in the form of color photos that are edited with a black and white photo finishing function to simplify images and produce photos with gradations from dark black to bright white, each of which has its own characteristics. meaning in memory by using lines of texture, shape, and light and dark play as well as gradations of various shades of gray without having to eliminate details. Then the work of black and white creation will be able to display a deep impression of a photo.

Black and white photography is only known for two colors, namely black and white, black to white gradations and differences in black density that make up the image in the photograph itself. This black and white photo shows that there are no 'wrong' colors due to the influence of the temperature of the light source, nor are colors that are too dark (over saturated) or colors that are faded. Because people who enjoy black and white photography work will focus on the 'tone' and will not be confused by other colors. The strength of this black and white photography lies in the black and white color gradation itself. In addition, black and white photography also relies on shapes and lines, because the combination of shapes, lines, and black and white color gradations will build rhythm in a black and white photographic work. So often black and white photos feel more dramatic and have a stronger message than color photos.
