The Lasting Impact of Childhood Criticism on Self-Judgment
Our ability to make judgments is a learned talent. If you experienced frequent reprimands as a child, you might (subconsciously or consciously) come to feel that you are deserving of criticism. When you are told repeatedly that you are fat, stupid, or lazy, you start to believe things. If you find yourself berating yourself because it seems appropriate and natural, you might even after your parents, teachers, or other childhood critics have ceased to have any effect start acting in that capacity.
