Imagine receiving encouragement from someone. How would you be transformed? Once you receive encouragement, what changes would you notice in your life compared to before?
In today's era of individualism, feelings are considered the most important aspect of human life, and most individuals perceive 'encouragement' as a means of feeling better emotionally. Hence, emotional well-being takes precedence over other problems such as discouragement, which is primarily defined as feeling 'down'. Conversely, being 'encouraged' is perceived as a means of feeling 'up'.
In such a cultural environment, the act of promoting preaching often entails promoting the idea of not having any worries and being content.
Although we try to avoid feelings of defeat and depression, they are inevitable companions of discouragement. However, it is important to differentiate between these emotions and the actual problem. The root issue lies in our lack of willpower, not our emotional state. To overcome this issue, we must become motivated to take action.
Observe the term encourage for a moment. Notice how it contains the root word courage. Essentially, the definition of encourage means to instill bravery in someone. This is because, as any military member will attest, courage is not solely an emotional state, but rather a behavior.
Challenge yourself. Was your heart-to-heart conversation with a friend truly encouraging? Take caution in your response. Merely feeling better isn't enough to constitute true (or complete) encouragement.
When you do what is right and continue doing it, you will be motivated at the deepest level.
For those who educate, evangelize, and compose, it is vital that we are precise and thoughtful in our depiction of encouragement. If our accomplishments lead people to merely be comforted, and they are still too scared to take the leap over the hazardous obstacle in front of them, then we haven't actually given them the gift of courage. Therefore, we must strive to genuinely and profoundly be a source of motivation.
Encourage individuals to undertake daunting tasks with the same spirit of courage that faith exudes, even if their spirits tremble. Fear, as many have noted, doesn't mean a lack of valor; it implies pursuing what is correct despite our faltering emotions.
