Review Of YA Fiction - It Sounded Better In My Head By Nina Kenwood

If there's a genre of fiction I find relaxing, it's YA (young adult) fiction which is written for readers between ages 12 to 20 years. These books are mostly for teenagers and it's about their lifestyle. But adults read them as well. I find them particularly interesting because they take me back to an age where life was fun and responsibilities were less or non-existent.

It Sounded Better In My Head is a YA fiction by a debut author, Nina Kenwood and this is my first time reading her work. This book was published in August 2019 and it's about 272 pages. It can be binge-read in one day, if there are no distractions.

The plot of the book focuses on the main character, Natalie, a young girl who feels her world is falling apart —from her parents divorce to her best friends, Zach and Lucy, dating each other. She feels betrayed because she had always daydreamed of this perfect life with Zach. Whenever the friends meet up, it's always awkward as Natalie feels like the third wheel in their relationship.

Then Natalie falls in love with Zach's brother, Alex, who is completely opposite to her in personality. She's shy, awkward while he's outgoing and the partying type. This relationship helps Natalie to discover life and who she truly is.

This author did a great job keeping readers entertained with Natalie's inner monologues. This book tells in a realistic and fun way the phases teenagers go through while building relationships, determining what truly matters in life, the usual teenage awkwardness and body insecurities.

This is a relatable, tender story I would recommend for readers. It reminds me of the lovely fiction, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. I'll rate it 4 stars out of 5, it was that enjoyable.

This book is a delight and I am encouraged to read more of this author's books as she publishes. Nina Kenwood is a debut author and I see her writing becoming finer over the years.
