The UEFA Champions League, now known as the UEFA Champions League, is Europe's biggest football organisation on a club basis, which has been held for many years with the participation of teams that have finished at the top of their country's league the season before.
The number of teams from each country participating in the Champions League is determined according to the UEFA rankings of the countries. According to the rules in force today, a maximum of 5 teams from a country can participate.
The Champions League is actually a continuation of the Champion Clubs Cup. In 1955, the organisation, which started to be played under the name of the European Champion Clubs Cup, was held with the participation of the teams that had completed their league as champions the season before. In other words, it was an organisation where only the champions showed up.
In the 1991 - 1992 season, with the change in the format, instead of each round being played with a double match elimination system, 2 groups and 4 teams in each group, starting from the quarter-finals, were switched to the league method. The qualifiers were still played in double matches until the teams that would qualify for the groups were determined.
With the 1992 - 1993 season, the Champions Club Cup was not limited to a change in format and the name of the organisation was changed to UEFA Champions League. Until the 1996 - 1997 season, the organisation, in which only the champions of their country participated, was made suitable for the participation of the champions as well as the teams that completed their leagues after the champion team according to the country ranking. In the following years, the number of teams was further increased and the organisation took its current form.
While a champions-only organisation may sound good today, it is also true that the Champions League has taken the competition to a higher level. In the organisation where only champions participated, the number of teams was limited and there were big differences between the balance of power of the teams. Initiatives such as including more than one team from the same country in the Champions League and including 4 teams from countries with good UEFA rankings have both brought the competition to a higher level and increased the number of matches played by equal forces.
The Champions League and the Europa League project, which was wanted to be launched with some initiatives in the past years, seem to have achieved success in terms of reaching the highest level in terms of the excitement it will provide and being satisfactory in terms of the revenues obtained. Nevertheless, an organisation in which only champions participate sounds good in terms of determining the champion of champions.
Today, the Champions League is a centre of attraction. Not only for the spectators and the participating clubs, but also for UEFA and the companies that sponsor the organisation. Having your voice heard by large masses at the highest level is one of the most important contributions of the organisation. When a club with a limited financial budget succeeds in qualifying for the Champions League, the "toe money" it receives can suddenly become the club's main source of income and make a great contribution to the club in the coming years.
It is also the biggest showcase for footballers. In order to be able to play in the Champions League and show himself to the whole world, even the transfer preferences are used in favour of the teams that have earned the right to participate in the Champions League.
Winning the Champions League is the main goal of some teams. To be able to participate in the Champions League is the main goal of some teams. Experiencing the excitement of the Champions League is the common expectation of all football fans.
As we end with the Champions League music, listening to this music being played in the stadium of the team we support must be one of our biggest fan desires and dreams.
