Have you ever desired anything so strongly that you would have changed your entire life to obtain it? We all have something that we passionately pursue, whether it be a romantic connection, a dream profession, or an athletic accomplishment. In fact, we can devote ourselves so completely to these activities that we fail to pause and consider whether or not we should be spending our time, money, and emotions on them.
God sincerely wants us to lead rich, fulfilling lives. But so frequently, our conception of "living life to the fullest" diverges from what God intends for us. In our culture, there is a constant barrage of conflicting promises of happiness and fulfillment. We are told that sex, money, power, education, and social standing are the keys to happiness. If we possess them all, we may be certain that we are leading a happy life. Who knows what else we might desire?
If we buy into this ideal of the happy life and then fall short of accomplishing all of these things, we feel inadequate and begin telling ourselves lies. We must always keep in mind that our circumstances or surroundings will never provide us with a full and meaningful existence. When we want to know and follow Jesus, we find our deepest desires are fulfilled—not because of what he accomplishes for us, but simply because he loves us.
Bartimaeus requests that Jesus cure his blindness in Mark's gospel. He has a strong desire for this, but he doesn't just see Jesus as a wandering miracle worker. He isn't pleading with Jesus to intervene and fix his issue so he can resume leading a fulfilling life. He is aware that the greatest longings of the human heart are satisfied in Jesus, and that by following Jesus, all of his past needs for identity and meaning have been completely satisfied.
Today, Jesus extends an invitation to you to consider your greatest aspirations. Turn once more to Jesus if you've looked elsewhere for solutions but have come up empty. Get rid of empty fulfillment promises and discover your identity, worth, and worthiness by "following Jesus on the way."
¿Alguna vez has deseado algo con tanta fuerza que habrías cambiado toda tu vida para obtenerlo? Si aceptamos este ideal de la vida feliz y luego no logramos todas estas cosas, nos sentimos inadecuados y comenzamos a decirnos mentiras. Siempre debemos tener en cuenta que nuestras circunstancias o nuestro entorno nunca nos proporcionarán una existencia plena y significativa. Cuando queremos conocer y seguir a Jesús, encontramos que nuestros deseos más profundos se cumplen, no por lo que él hace por nosotros, sino simplemente porque nos ama.
Bartimeo pide que Jesús cure su ceguera en el evangelio de Marcos. Tiene un fuerte deseo por esto, pero no ve a Jesús simplemente como un hacedor de milagros errante. No le está suplicando a Jesús que intervenga y solucione su problema para que pueda volver a llevar una vida plena. Es consciente de que los mayores anhelos del corazón humano están satisfechos en Jesús, y que siguiendo a Jesús, todas sus necesidades pasadas de identidad y sentido han sido completamente satisfechas.
Hoy, Jesús te extiende una invitación para que consideres tus mayores aspiraciones. Dirígete una vez más a Jesús si has buscado soluciones en otra parte pero te has quedado con las manos vacías. Deshazte de las promesas de cumplimiento vacías y descubre tu identidad, valor y dignidad "siguiendo a Jesús en el camino".
